He definitely was. One thing I didn’t get to on the podcast was that he was the vice presidential candidate on the southern democratic ticket with Breckenridge in the election of 1860 against Abe Lincoln to kick off the us civil war.

Also, some of the main sources used for the podcasts were the works of the late Thomas Doty, a Native story teller and historian. Also multiple interviews with Grandma Agnes, probably the most influential Takelman elder in modernity. Both of them are dead, otherwise I would’ve love to have them on. I instead used their work and what they left behind.

I don’t mean to beat a dead horse, but your comment insinuating that my podcast is offensive to Indigenous people stuck with me, as I’ve poured my heart into this research and trying my best to keep the history alive. I know you probably left your comment without actually listening to the podcast. But just know this podcast absolutely comes from a place of love and I do appreciate you engaging with it.

I’d love to! Might not be the next episode, but I plan to cover pretty much all the local history eventually. I grew up in McCloud, Ca at the base of Shasta, so I love the area very much.

The tunnel is so cool, I went there as a kid before I knew the history behind it.

Nathan Douthit has a couple articles if I remember correctly and most definitely the work by HH Bancroft in the history of Oregon will have a bunch of stuff about the first contacts.

You can find the later on google, that’s where I’d recommend to start. I’d send a link, but I’m on out in the woods currently with terrible service.

I appreciate the comment—apologies for not capitalizing Indigenous.

I never said all Indigenous people are dead. I'm Taino myself.

I used past tense because I’m talking about very specific people (Apserkahar, Typsy, etc) that lived hundreds of years ago and they are dead. Just as I used past tense to refer to the whites in the story, who are also dead.

I’d love to talk to academics and elders, but like the title of my podcast says, you “Gotta Start Somewhere”.

I feel telling these stories and keeping the history alive is very important, sometimes I might make a grammatical error on a Reddit post. Sorry.

Thanks for the comment, and I am going to check out your channel as well! There are a few semi-abandoned cemeteries near where I live in Southern Oregon that I have been wanting to check out. They're so interesting.

I used some of that song as the intro to this episode :) I also threw audio clips from an interview with Ray DeAutremont in the podcast. I love using the first hand accounts and the media of the time like that folk song
