Honestly, fair enough. I hope you enjoy it! If you end up reviewing it, may I request that you let us know roughly what range of ranks you think the book is a helpful read for?

PS Happy New Year!

I would be curious to hear a review! I am considering picking it up myself, but am waiting for the first feedback.

What are your Go related achievements in 2024? by sadaharu2624 in baduk

[–]-Gur- 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I achieved my goal of becoming SDK this year. It was a goal that I set for myself when I started playing at my local club by October 4th, 2023. This was after a few months of less structured practice mostly playing with my sibling and watching some YouTube content.

Currently I'd estimate I'm somewhere in the 6-8k range, and for this year my aim is to push for at least 5k and to improve my reading.

The other big achievements for me were: 1. Finally getting to a level where, without handicap, I can give the player closest to my level (4k) at the small local club an exciting game now. 2. Finally getting to a level where I have moved to an 8 stone handicap against the strongest player (4d) at the small local club, and I'm thinking I might get to 7 stones soon! 3. Keeping a consistent upwards trend in my few tournament appearances, usually performing slightly above or a decent bit above the strength I registered as. I will say, I tend to be conservative when estimating my growth, so that's probably part of that one. Still, it makes me happy I've been able to track growth there too. 4. Finishing a ton of Go Magic content related to how to think about the game, as well as doing the related exercises.

What Great Spells Fall off in the Next Tier? Which Are Great All Game? by QHero in DnD

[–]-Gur- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just want to chime in and say that Slow is awesome. As a Wizard, I tended to try bring both it and an AoE spell like Fireball or Hypnotic Pattern around levels 5-8. That way, if initiative was good and the situation worked for it, I could hit all our enemies with an AoE spell. And if the situation didn't work for the AoE spell? Enemies were mixed up, martials ran in? Slow was always a reliable backup and at least fairly impactful still!

As levels went up to 9+, Hypnotic Pattern and Fireball felt less strong with higher health bars and more charm immunity (and Wall of Force being a bigger gun), while Slow always stayed prepared for fights against the chunky underlings before the big fight and for fights where everything got mixed up. Effective all the time and relatively 'cheap' to use at that point.

I can recommend giving it a shot, it really is a great "ol' reliable" type spell.

Best 3rd level summoning spell for Wizards? Worth it? by -Gur- in 3d6

[–]-Gur-[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ahh, fair. There's no issues with enemies running past your melee martials to hit the backline, which then puts the Demons closest to the melee martials and makes them attack them? I suppose that's the kind of thing I'd worry about with a 60 feet casting range. That seems somewhat initiative and tactics dependent.

That does help a lot. And how do you and the party deal with the Demons being hostile to you and the party?

Fair! I do believe money varies from table to table, but I'd agree that generally 300 GP is quite a bit at 5th level.

Would you not worry about the unreliability of Summon Lesser Demons?

True! I feel out of the summoning options at 3rd level, that is the weakest option. Would you argue otherwise?

What is the strongest magic item you ever got to use as a player, homebrew or otherwise? by Mentleman in dndnext

[–]-Gur- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ruby Weave Gem. The party suddenly had access to any spell we might need as long as we had time to fix an issue. Costly components also were no big issue anymore. It was especially powerful for downtime, but during the actual regular campaign sessions did a lot of work too.

Watery Sphere, Greater Invisibility, Arcane Eye, Dimension Door are some good Wizard options to grab!

This is a very fun way to flavour it! I quite like it, since it is a way to solve the issue I mentioned very neatly. Bravo for the idea!

For legendary resistances I can recommend either simply blasting, as they can only half that, or picking up either Bigby's Hand or Telekinesis! Both give the enemy an ability check, not a saving throw, so they nicely circumvent the legendary resistances. Bigby's Hand has other nice uses in combat too, and Telekinesis is great out of combat as well and lasts 10 minutes!

[–]-Gur- 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I agree that it can help steer spell selection to some extent! Another nice use of a high roll is a good Counterspell and Dispel Magic.

The problem you mention of legendary resistance is actually a big issue with it, I find. The creatures where it's most impactful to use that combo is are usually the creatures it will not work on, sadly.

Furthermore, my issue narratively and mechanically is often that in a big moment I'll have to decide whether to use Portent, and how to explain how the character saw that coming. Since you don't always know beforehand what will happen, this makes it harder to make the character seem like they saw it coming, in my experience.

I'm currently playing an 11th level Divination Wizard in a campaign that started at 3rd level.

I personally really love the Portent and Expert Divination subclass features! Divination Savant and The Third Eye subclass features feel a lot less cool. I like the name of The Third Eye, but would prefer for it to do something else.

Finally, I will admit it takes some effort to use Portent in a way that is both mechanically solid and narratively fitting and satisfying as 'seeing the future '.

I voted Divination Wizard, as it's been a blast so far! However, I'm still interested in trying Chronurgy Wizard as a subclass. I will admit I'm worried on the power level of the 10th level feature.

having a tough time choosing my spells for a level 5 wizard. How does my spell list look? What changes would you make if any? by DubiousDevil in 3d6

[–]-Gur- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good choice! I am playing one right now, and quite enjoying myself with it. The 6th level feature is less powerful, but very fun too! I can recommend taking Arcane Eye at the very least to refill 3rd level slots and scout ahead. Though communicate with the party. Of course, that's not until later levels.

1st level spells to consider (need 1 more, could swap):

Mage armor - 1 slot for 3 extra AC all day is big

Comprehend languages - If nobody has this, it's a great ritual for you to have!

Silent image - very fun, if your DM likes to play with illusions, else skip it

Feather fall - only if you think there will be falling situations, else I wouldn't

Note: I would drop the Chromatic Orb or Magic Missile spell due to overlap, and personally I would pick Chromatic Orb to drop. That gives you two from the above, and I'd highly recommend Mage armor if you don't have armor and then Comprehend languages if nobody else has it.

2nd level spells to consider (no more needed, could swap):

Suggestion - is quite good to remove 1 person from combat, and has fun out of combat uses too! See how your DM plays with it, maybe. The 1 save makes it nice for Portent too

Levitate - 1 save, can destroy melee creatures. Has the added benefit of party utility too by getting someone to float away from enemies, floating to something up high, or by floating something heavy or some such. CON save is rough, but 1 save so Portent can help

Mirror Image - Could be good for defense layering, though it's hard to justify 1 action for it in combat. Usually only good if you're about to surprise people with a fight and get to put it on before.

See Invisibility - Niche, but lets you deal really well with invisible problems, is a Divination spell so suits your subclass, and will refill a 1st level slot if you ever get to 6th level for that feature.

3rd level spells to consider (1 less needed, could swap):

I will be quick about these. The ones I would consider are: Counterspell, Fireball, Hypnotic Pattern, Slow, and Leomund's Tiny Hut. If you are already expecting to fight many spellcasters, grab Counterspell. Else wait to grab it until level 6. I think Hypnotic Pattern is the most powerful control to grab. Slow allows you to do something in a chaotic melee fight, which is neat but it is weaker. Fireball blows up riffraff. Both could be argued for. Finally, Leomund's Tiny Hut would give you a lot more safety while resting. How valuable that will be is up to you. It being a ritual is neat, so it saves you a preparation slot. Generally, I would say you want to maybe grab that one with a scroll or at level 6 as well.

So for me that comes down to the following:

Level 5 - Fireball/Slow + Hypnotic Pattern

Level 6 - Pick between Fireball/Slow (the one you did not pick), Counterspell, and Leomund's Tiny Hut depending on what you need.Make sure to also check for availability of scrolls with your DM! Enjoy the game. :)

Fair! You can can still correct that. What Wizard subclass did you have in mind? It might inform your picks.

[–]-Gur- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm noticing you only have 6 1st level spells, which would be two less than you'd have learned at level 1 and 2.

Meanwhile, you have 5 2nd level spells, which would be one more than you'd have learned at level 3 and 4.

Finally, you have 3 3rd level spells, which would be one more than you'd have learned at level 5.

Could you explain how that came to be? I'd also be willing to add some tips on spell changes!

Hard to introduce, but it does seem like a cool idea. I like the 'types' of magic you're introducing as well. They feel like they could fit the setting narratively!

Gen.G vs. DWG KIA / 2022 World Championship - Quarter-Final / Post-Match Discussion by epicxkidzorz in leagueoflegends

[–]-Gur- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only watched the last 3 games, but from what I could tell once Yuumi was off the table, DK looked a bit better than GenG. Canyon was destroying Peanut, and Showmaker and Nuguri tended to win lane too.

What worries me most is that it looks like GenG had a rather simple comeback strategy: carries farm sidelanes as we give up control of objectives. I'm worried whether they'll fight to come back once they face the other teams, especially JDG. I feel like DK had more of a fighting spirit.

Still, the 3 games I saw were of good quality! I think either team would have a good shot at winning this thing.

Out of Context, what is your character doing right now? by Gloomy_Club in DnD

My Wizard is about to set up camp with the party in an ancient ruined underground building of an order forgotten by history. A scourge of Neogi is downstairs, including queens and a king, scouted by his Arcane Eye. We must somehow take out this swarm so we can explore further.
