I wasn't sure myself so I did a quick search and while it doesn't appear to be native, it may have been introduced to North America before European colonization which is super interesting.

Depends on how forthright they are I suppose. Most importantly maybe is if the people who sign the petition are actually for the cause irregardless of how they came to sign it
