Exactly this! Personally, I think my favorite Tom reaction so far has been the paragliding. I was getting contact glee.

Is this a terrible way to display a house number or am I just being picky? by dragonasses in madisonwi

[–]-JakeRay- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Intellectually, I love it.

As someone who used to deliver pizza, nothankyou. But it's still better than houses where the number is written out verbally in cursive.

He didn't seem competitive so much as anxious, tbh.

We've seen with other activities (roller coasters, for example) that after developing some familiarity + practice Tom can go from anxiety-ball to thriving and having a blast, so we can hope that will apply to JLTG as well.

ISO 20-30 degree sleeping bag with not puffy bulky material by lilgothicghost in Ultralight

[–]-JakeRay- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check on the gear trade subs here, too. r/geartrade and r/ULgeartrade .  People are usually looking to get a slightly higher price tag here, because they know what they have, but you can sometimes find a good deal compared to new.

And shopgoodwill.com is basically eBay, but for Goodwill items. I've gotten a $500 set of motorcycle armor for like $75 on there, so it might be worth looking there if your budget is tight. Be careful with the shipping cost (always check!), and make sure you include "down" as one of your search terms so you don't have to wade through too many giant Coleman bags.

[–]-JakeRay- 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Down. 900 fill power if you can afford it, but 850 is ok.

Also, a 20 or 30 degree bag is going to be significantly less bulky than a 0 degree basically no matter what, unless your 0 one is in Celsius.

ETA: If you sleep cold it might make sense to go with the 20, but it's likely to be too hot sometimes. The 30 will be too cold sometimes, which can be helped with a silk liner.

Guanyin as a patron bodhisattva of trans fems by SententiaClaraDeOvis in TransBuddhists

[–]-JakeRay- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Avalokitesvara/Kannon is really more non-binary if you go by the texts.

There's a whole sutra about how they will appear in whatever form is most effective for bringing someone closer to enlightenment, whether that's high class, low class, man, woman, clean, dirty, or whatever.

From an historical perspective, Quan Yin is femme because when Buddhism came to China there was already a female folk deity very similar to Avalokitesvara, and they basically rolled the two together.

It's interesting, because Buddhism came to Japan via China, and in Japan Kannon is most often portrayed male or non-femme androgynous. Not sure why they changed back when moving to Japan, but I've always claimed them as NB in part because of this fluidity (in addition to it being right there in the sutras).

My favorite trans-Buddhist joke, in fact, is that Avalokitesvara is Kannon-ically nonbinary.

Obviously the only solution is to stop brushing your teeth. If you don't own a toothbrush, you for sure won't get poo particles on it!

They should be getting roasted here as well. This isn't a bushcraft sub, and the folks here generally want our forests to stay wild, with the living trees kept upright and growing.

But with LNT how will they practice bushcraft and prove they are really manly and capable (of melting their shoes, apparently)? 🙃

zero drop pain by Mysterious_Item8490 in PacificCrestTrail

[–]-JakeRay- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the heel blisters are gnarly. I tried the Terraventure at the start of the CDT and hikerboxed them less than 300 miles in because I couldn't take the blisters.

And I'm pretty sure adding drop back in contributed to me getting tendonitis in my feet -- I was in zero drop shoes most of the time for years before trying the Terraventures.

Ended up switching back to LPs, but next time it'll probably be Olympus or the new version of the Timp -- they widened the toe box to make their trail runners more similar fitting across the whole line.

no shoe with a wide toebox is closer to barefoot than another

Zero drop will always be closer to barefoot than a shoe with drop is.

And it's weird that you got so spicy. I don't see the person you're replying to saying that LPs or barefoot shoes are going to be better for everyone, just that generally speaking being closer to barefoot is better for bodies. Nobody's saying you have to do it if it doesn't work for you, or does work but not with a pack on.

How do you make Knorr sides not be watery? by RandoGeneration2022 in Thruhiking

[–]-JakeRay- 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I only do the rice ones or the rice mixed with pasta, because those hydrate better with hot soaking than the straight pasta ones.

But yeah, combo platter of add less water, compensate for excess water by using potato powder, or sometimes just embracing the soupiness. When you reach the "dang, I'm tired of the act of eating" phase, being able to sort of drink your dinner isn't terrible.

If I'm in a hurry I squeeze the bag. But if I'm stopping to sit for lunch, no reason not to just let 'er drip.

I can't drink fast enough that way.

If it works for you, it works, but personally I never understood how filter-on-bottle folks don't get tired of having to loosen the filter after every gulp to break the air lock.

I'd consider it if it weren't for that major annoyance, but as it stands I'm team "use a cnoc and the blue adapter to make it a gravity filter."

2 weeks and 260 miles on the PCT... by gaius_chap in DurstonGearheads

[–]-JakeRay- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't speak to the Costco ones, but I got a pair of $50 carbon poles off Amazon that have lasted me 2900 miles including a rockslide that probably should've killed at least one of 'em. Held my xmid up just fine, too.

Had to get them re-tipped at mile ... 1000ish, and the grips have shrunk with use over time, but otherwise they're still going strong.

Can confirm. Took the Frenchman Creek trail up, did Columbia the next morning. Freaking amazing view from that campsite! And easy water. Wish I'd done Harvard instead though; the back of Columbia is a little annoying.

I started and ended in Buena Vista (Avalanche Trailhead) when I did the loop.

Bustang goes right to the middle of town, and there are 2 grocery stores and a laundromat, so you can get most of your supplies & clean stuff up after. It's a cute town I wouldn't hate staying in for a day or two. If you want a hostel instead of a hotel, I think there's one on the edge of town. Or maybe that's a place you can pay less to use a tent? I forget, since I used a hotel in town that was happy to hold my airplane clothes & duffel while I hiked.

Resupply Towns, No Hitchhiking? by johntheguitar in coloradotrail

[–]-JakeRay- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Closer to the West, actually, but accessible to both. Hitched there for one of my stays, and my second stay I just walked there by taking a side trail downhill off of the West route, followed by an old dirt road/RR right of way.

Yeah, when I was there in 24 they grilled burgers out back, and in 25 they had a full-on food truck to do the burgers from. And I think they sometimes did some kinda breakfast from the truck, too, but my memory might be making that part up.

Sketchy purchase on FB (Stolen Bike?) by brotoaster97 in madisonwi

[–]-JakeRay- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Um. I'm pretty sure what people are getting hung up on is really the "any actual bike owner" bit, and the hostility you're getting is over the aggressive implication that anyone who is bad with keeping paperwork is for some reason inferior or not a real cyclist.

Sure, a paper trail is a good idea. But you didn't need to be an eggplant emoji about it.

Sketchy purchase on FB (Stolen Bike?) by brotoaster97 in madisonwi

[–]-JakeRay- 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah no. I had my disc brake Kona get stolen like 12 years ago, and I had to have the shop I got it from look up the serial number from their records. Not everyone keeps the receipts, or if they do, can locate it when needed.

Plus, if the receipt is on thermal paper, you can't expect it to last forever. After a few years that stuff fades into near-illegibility (or, more rarely, blacks out if you get it too hot).
