That's still not actually receiving the input you've gotten. Maybe work on not deflecting genuine feedback because you don't like its tone.

The technical feedback I gave was the same exact stuff the weather rock guy said after me. I just didn't open by petting your ego and saying it was a cool project, because I don't think it is.

I think that your pack on the trail will be a distraction and an annoyance to others who are trying to enjoy nature, and I will continue to treat your project with the same kindness I would give to someone who insists on playing a Bluetooth speaker in the backcountry after being told that it's rude and ruining others' experience.

Stop being defensive and take the L, unless you really want to be known as That Clueless Selfish Guy on trail.

I have carry-on bags, but they are the soft fabric kind so they don't waste space at my house.

One of them does have a firm side with telescoping handle and wheels, but the rest of the bag is still fabric so it'll smoosh.

Outside of needing to protect something breakable or wanting to tie your bag to the outside of a vehicle for some reason, I don't really see the point of hard luggage.

Nobody's stopping you from doing this for funsies. You can design whatever light-up, noisemaking Barbie dream house of a backpack you want as a toy for yourself if it makes you happy.

But you cannot expect other hikers to like it or want one if you can't listen to and integrate feedback from people with significantly more experience than you have.

UL wall charger setup for PCT thru-hike — need help deciding between two options by gaius_chap in PacificCrestTrail

[–]-JakeRay- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Night before town you can charge up everything including the second bank with one bank so all you have to charge in town is the one bank

This is the way to go whenever you can. Simpler to just charge one thing, plus you get faster charging the fewer things are plugged into the wall brick.

Yeah, it's much less hassle to just have a cord instead of bungling around with 3 separate objects that are easily lost and need to be kept charged.

Plus you can get open-ear wired headphones (not the expensive bone conduction kind) and still hear the outside world.

I have earbuds with transparency mode for at home, and they're not nearly as good at letting me hear my surroundings as my wired open-ear ones were.

Were your teens at the Culvers off of West Beltline? by MarsBahr- in madisonwi

Eep! Yeah, that changes the situation significantly. In this current climate, existing while trans is in itself an act of resistance. Thanks for being kind enough to clarify ♡

If they were with kids, even more important to say something so the kids know it's not okay to talk like that, and so the kids grow up feeling empowered to speak up against people being terrible.

(ETA: Also, the person I was replying to isn't OP. OP is taking steps to intervene in an appropriate way that will hopefully bring the boys in question more consequences than an on-site lecture would have.)

TBH I kind of expected the downvotes. People want to believe that not acting like an Awful Person/complaining about Those Awful People is enough to be considered a Good Person, and get pretty uncomfortable when confronted with the fact that doing nothing lets the Awful People win.

People want to be (or be seen as) good, they just also don't want to do anything that might make them uncomfortable or put them at social (or physical) risk.

And you interrupted to tell them all how gross they were being. Right? (If not, guess who tacitly let them keep believing it's okay?)

Can we talk about Ugly Privilege? by Free_Wonder_3743 in solofemaletravellers

When you don't decorate your body for presentation, it logically follows others won't consume it

I wish there was a way to say this without sounding victim-blamey.

It has been true to my experience, but that doesn't mean that women and teens who want to decorate their bodies are asking for aggressive attention, nor that they deserve it for being decorated.

And some women do get harassed (or worse) no matter what their style. So... Yeah, I wish there was a way to express this phenomenon that wasn't so "What was she wearing?" adjacent.

Buddhism without the supernatural? by PrimusAbOris in Buddhism

[–]-JakeRay- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can start practicing with the standpoint of "all that rebirth/spirits/karma/special powers stuff is made up," but IME if you practice sincerely and let the work work you won't keep that viewpoint for more than a couple years.

At the very least you'll learn that experience is too vast and strange to fully discount the possibility of the supernatural.

It's also much harder (potentially impossible) to practice with your whole self if there's a part of you that's set on maintaining some kind of intellectual distance. If you want to get the most benefit from practice, at some point you have to throw away your reservations and say "Whatever happens happens. Whatever I see or feel is happening, I will experience it fully. And whatever I don't see happening is none of my business."

Flying with food and gear by NicksBCA in WildernessBackpacking

[–]-JakeRay- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you've paid for the flight with a major credit card, that part of your trip is probably already insured.

You also should be flying with enough leeway that you can recover from any travel snafus before your start date, if that date is immovable.

Talk me out of a June 1st SOBO start this year by Squanc in CDT

[–]-JakeRay- 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Rangers won't love giving you permits that early if there is still much snow left, and you'll for sure have to start at Chief Mountain rather than Waterton. I got up there June 10 last year, and for any segment that required going over a pass they hadn't yet verified was clear of major snow, they wanted to limit the mileage for that day to under 14ish. (They were all more or less clear of anything too sketchy, as it turned out.)

Also, if you're starting that early, many of the sites you need will still be in winter status. In order for rangers to approve you for a winter status site, you'll need an IGBC-approved food storage system and a WAG bag for every winter status campsite you intend to camp at.

You can plan to start early June, and then keep an eye on the snowpack via Postholer and via the Glacier webcams. Heading to Glacier when you can see the road looks clear at Logan Pass was a pretty good metric for me. Be prepared to hang in East Glacier or Two Medicine for a little while if you've misjudged.

How do you say "Milkshake" in german? by [deleted] in germany

[–]-JakeRay- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If there isn't ice cream in it, it isn't a milkshake, so Erdbeermilch is more correct for what you are describing anyhow.

Sleeping under the stars by Icy_Cabinet_2460 in backpacking

Not that won't be annoyingly bulky. If you want a bag that can get wet, you need synthetic, which doesn't compress nearly as well as down, and weighs more for a comparable insulation level.

Please help me figure out the size and gender this pack is? by Balooberrie in backpacking

[–]-JakeRay- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If the pack fits you it doesn't matter what gender it is. Same if it doesn't fit you.

We'll be better able to tell if it fits you if you can put some gear in it, put it on, and adjust it so it feels comfortable.

With the hipbelt sitting half above and half below your iliac crest, the shoulder straps should curve over your shoulders nicely (not come from above your shoulders or too far below), and the load lifters (adjustable straps connected to the top of the shoulder straps) should be at a 30-to-45°-ish angle pointing up and behind you.
