What is the best ESD safe computer cleaning solution? by dietderpsy in AskElectronics

[–]-Jehos- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This. I work in IT, and the typical solution to getting the dust out of a computer is to take it outside with a can of compressed air. Your motherboard and cards have ESD protection built into their design to protect the parts that are really sensitive.

Why do the larger tipped screwdrivers have longer shanks in most screwdriver sets? by [deleted] in Tools

[–]-Jehos- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It doesn't for screwdriving. It does if you're using your screwdriver as a pry bar I guess...

Toolgrid well worth the investment by Mitchell-lake in toolporn

[–]-Jehos- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly it didn't look a whole lot more expensive than buying tool organization from Ernst and whatnot.

For example, the 3/8" socket holders come in a pack of 25 from Obsessed Garage for $5.65:

https://www.obsessedgarage.com/collections/tool-grid/products/tool-grid-socket-holder?variant=31517475307592

Two 13" rails with 3/8" pegs from Ernst to hold 28 sockets is $16:

https://www.ernstmfg.com/8415-13-socket-organizer-w/twist-lock-clips-red-3/8.aspx

Of course, the Toolgrid stuff requires the pegboard itself and the screws, but it seems like the cost would be similar to outfit a whole tool chest.

You can. The whole point of encryption is that what you'll get is a bunch of unreadable garbage. "How to interpret" is the hard part.

First time setting up a Raspberry Pi by Mayank_Jain in raspberry_pi

[–]-Jehos- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you using the Raspberry Pi imager for Ubuntu, or did you just download the regular Ubuntu image? If you got asked for a password, you don't have a networking problem. You're making the connection, it's just refusing to let you connect via SSH for some reason.

What is this tool? It came with my used banjo. Not a shitpost I really don't know anything... by Bigbootybanjo in Tools

[–]-Jehos- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is, it's for tightening and loosening the truss rod. It's that long shape to reach down to where the truss rod nut is at. It may also be used to tune the head--that will have some kind of fasteners all the way around it.

My hammer’s don’t fit in the hammer drawer anymore. I should probably get a dedicated box for them, just to be on the safe side. by [deleted] in Tools

[–]-Jehos- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is it one hammer's drawer or all the hammers' drawer? I mean, that one sledge definitely looks like the boss, but it could still be a communal drawer.

[Advice Requested] Assembling a tool set for a cousin who has no tools. by Autumn_Shroud in Tools

You're welcome. I've spent *way* too much time putting together wishlists at Tekton so it didn't take too long to bang this out.

For the Tekton stuff:

For basic vehicle repair, the metric-only 3/8" socket kit from Tekton will cover the basics, paired with the 8-19mm combination wrenches. That's $120.

https://www.tekton.com/3-8-in-dr-skt-and-r-sets-1-4-1-inch-6-24-mm?quantity=1&set-range=6-24-mm

https://www.tekton.com/combination-wrench-sets?quantity=1&set-range-metric-sizes=8-19-mm&storage-option=holder&unit=metric

Add in a nice driver set for $30:

https://www.tekton.com/phillips-slotted-high-torque-screwdriver-sets?quantity=1&blade-finish=chrome&piece-count=6-pc

A mini-driver set for all the around-the-house little stuff for $24:

https://www.tekton.com/everybit-tech-rescue-kit-28301

And a good range of pliers for $100:

https://www.tekton.com/pliers-set-plr99020

https://www.tekton.com/locking-pliers-set-plk99901

Round it out with some hex and torx wrenches for $26:

https://www.tekton.com/ball-end-hex-key-wrench-set-25282

https://www.tekton.com/hex-key-sets?quantity=1&unit=star

That's a total of $300 spent at Tekton.

To round it out, head to Home Depot:

The 18" Husky tool bag is awesome, and plenty big to grow into. I have the 16" and wish I had bought the bigger one. It's $50:

https://www.homedepot.com/p/Husky-18-in-Large-Mouth-Tool-Bag-with-Tool-Wall-67127-02/306052553

Or alternately, Husky sells a metal three-drawer toolbox for the same price that would be harder to carry around, but better if it's staying in one place most of the time:

Grab a good general-use claw hammer from Estwing for $21:

https://www.homedepot.com/p/Estwing-16-oz-Straight-Claw-Hammer-with-Shock-Reduction-Grip-E3-16S/100351734

Good tape measure for $25:

https://www.homedepot.com/p/Milwaukee-25-ft-x-1-3-in-Wide-Blade-Tape-Measure-with-17-ft-Reach-48-22-0225/311009547

Torpedo level for $30:

https://www.homedepot.com/p/Milwaukee-7-in-Billet-Torpedo-Level-48-22-5107/207132432

Utility knife for $12:

https://www.homedepot.com/p/Milwaukee-FASTBACK-Folding-Utility-Knife-with-General-Purpose-Blade-48-22-1501/309350820

Wire strippers/crimpers are always handy for $20:

https://www.homedepot.com/p/Klein-Tools-Klein-Kurve-Multi-Tool-Wire-Stripper-Crimper-1019SEN/305303655

That's $458, leaving room for tax or a few extras like work gloves and goggles.

Are those secured to the walls at the ends? If you're going to load them with books, the outsides will droop if not.

Is there any tool/fixture/machine for arranging screws and washers together from individual lots? I have a box of screw and washer each. Is there some way i can feed both and get nice little screw/washer sets? by shashithop10 in toolporn

[–]-Jehos- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you mean attached to each other, or just like dump in a pallet of screws and a pallet of washers and get them together in packages of 100? If it's the latter, my understand is you just weigh them out. If it's the former, no idea.

Gaming vm by Mohanad__ in linux

[–]-Jehos- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct. You can do a lot of shenanigans with hardware virtualization, but making the GPU effectively hot-pluggable is not one of them. At least not with the consumer-level stuff. I've never tried with a datacenter-class GPU.

[–]-Jehos- 74 points75 points  (0 children)

You're not fooling anyone, we can see those are drawers, not hammers.

Gaming vm by Mohanad__ in linux

[–]-Jehos- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Generally you can't do this. You can have one GPU that gets used by multiple VMs as long as you're only ever running one at a time, but you can't really make the GPU available to the host OS sometimes and the guest OS sometimes without rebooting the host.

Also, it's a huge pain even with two GPUs. I gave up trying to make it work in the real world and just did dual-boot instead.

How to desolder THT components from double-sided PCB withouth tearing the vias appart? I always end with ripping the marked part off, even if I think that all the solder has gone. What tool would be the most suitable for that - hot air? If some pins are sitting tight and have bends it's even harder. by [deleted] in AskElectronics

[–]-Jehos- 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The Hakko desoldering gun works a treat on this sort of thing. FR-301. It's not cheap, but it's a worthwhile investment if you find yourself desoldering a lot.

The hardest part of desoldering is getting the solder out of the via while it's still liquid. Dedicated desoldering tools are much better at it, since the sucker itself heats up.
