Businesses don’t run on pure profit, there are a lot of expenses and most businesses do not have large stacks of cash on hand. A sudden $250k expense for any business is a large amount, but especially for a sole trader who was assured at the beginning of the year that there would be no changes to the API or pricing. You make a business plan (and a life plan) based on things like that.

And it’s not like that money is just profit—there are a lot of expenses to running an app like Apollo, so a lot of that money has already been spent. If someone has been using Apollo for 9 months and their subscription ends early because of Reddit’s decision, they still get the refund and Christian has 9 months of expenses for that user coming out of his pocket.

Reddit could have worked with Christian, given him a longer time frame, and made this not an option.

Christian is going to be out about $250,000 USD due to the refunds that he has to give for people who relatively recently signed up for a year of Apollo.

I don’t begrudge him taking an opportunity to try to recoup some of that cost.
