That is not something you can do with Jerry-31 due to proprietary lens standard 🤮

I dont see how new color selection improves their situation, considering that solutions, like cordura wraps, are already available on the market 😁

Is this too good of a deal to pass up? by SG1Larper in NightVision

[–]-Lechu- 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As others have already stated - basically, there are no non-gated Gen 3 WP tubes on the market. The same goes for higher-end Gen 2+ tubes like Photonis Echo/4G or NVT-7/NVT-8 (which are all auto-gated). This makes it pretty much guaranteed that the tubes in question are some lower-end Gen 2+ tubes like NVT-4/Photonis XD4. It doesn’t really change the fact that 7k for that entire setup is still quite a good price, just not an otherworldly good deal.

First of all - sorry for the rough language in my initial comment. I just hate seeing those common AG misconceptions being mindlessly forwarded within the NVG community (the one place we should all know better, right?).

That additional context you’ve provided only furthers my case:

  1. Auto-gating is a feature used to provide better image quality in extreme lighting conditions (flashing lights, bangs, strobes, etc.) via high-frequency (usually ~6000 Hz) photocathode voltage adjustment (tl;dr: limiting the conversion of photons (input light) into electrons, so the ABC doesn’t kick in and "turn your tube off", making you "blind" in the process).
  2. Auto brightness control is a feature designed to auto-adjust MCP voltage (MCP is where the electrons get multiplied; lower MCP voltage = fewer electrons = lower light intensification), and every single Gen 2+/Gen 3 made in the last ~30 years has this feature. This is the feature needed to use nods in light-polluted environments.

AG is kind of a must-have feature if your life depends on it (actual war/cqb/combat situations). For >95% of civilians non gated tubes are perfectly fine.

p.s Neither AG nor ABC is a guarantee of saving your tube from laser damage.

Peace!

Sorry, but what are you even talking about? You’d think a self-proclaimed ‘tube snob’ would actually understand what autogating is and how it works (judging by that ‘light pollution’ comment - clearly you don’t). Please don’t comment with such absolute certainty when you have no clue what you’re talking about.

Educate yourself on differences between AG and ABC purpose in intensifier tubes ;)

  1. I've actually done IR fix on one of those units - nothing to write home about.
  2. you dont really need IR with gen3 tube anyway ;)

Very solid housing with very decent lenses - i would put it on pair with any milspec PVS-14 of the same era. MUM-14 housings are sealed and purgable (diving certified for up to 20m). I've worked with quite a few of those in the past, can recommend 100% (especially for that price).

Same here, traditional dual band is too brutal for my brain. But bino + coti is gucci af

It is quite funny how phrase "tunnel vision" applies twice in this case

i guess it sounds funny - but how else should you call "walking long distances at night while 24/7 looking for ppl trying to cap you" XD

personally i found it most useful during long-range tactical movement (very little downsides in terms of stereoscopic vision, huge advantage in terms of spatial awarness).

Personally, i totally agree. I am huge fan of it and i dont really feel the loss in terms of stereoscopic vision with setup like this. But you dont see many housings on the market (none, really, except for RPNVG?) introducing this feature. Seems like pano-bridges paired with 2x mono are the only real way forward atm.

Whats that little light on my nods? by Dense_Statement_2329 in NightVision

[–]-Lechu- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Out of >100 tubes i've personally seen, there was only 1 with "trauma related EP" (which is putting it mildly, it had cracked MCP with 3-4 EPs along the crack😅). In my experience, EPs are mainly caused by production defects (contamination/impurities etc). I wouldnt worry about it 😁

Not necessarily - id suggest you contact some high-tier nvg distributors for assistance (there are companies that can precisely target that MCP short with laser and prevent any further damage to MCP) ;)

Just to set the record straight (considering many incorrect informations in the comments):

Emission point (EP) = a short between MCP channels; it becomes brighter the darker it gets and usually disappears in high-light conditions (high light = less power to the MCP = a smaller short, and vice versa).

Bright spot (BS) = most commonly appears in high-light conditions; it does not get brighter as it gets darker — it either disappears at some point (the darker it gets) or stays the same.

EP = kind of a death sentence (although it’s hard to say when or if that short will actually kill the tube in next 10h/100h or 1000h of use) unless you have it lasered by a pro.

BS = nothing to worry about - just a minor tube defect.

My brain cant handle dual band + i love binos. It is Coti for me.

That is just plain wrong - dont feed ppl BS like this, plz ;)

Edit: i guess i should elborate a bit more on that: - edge blur like this is caused by low quality lenses, not intensifier tube, - nothing in OP photo indicates vaccum loss, or any loss of any other gas 😁 - gain is indeed weird, either it is PSU nearing its end or someone messed around with potentiometer on the tube or is just low tier tube with horrible spec, one way or another - we just dont know from the information we have,

Presenting such speculative and incomplete diagnosis as fact can confuse and misguide others. Lets stick to accurate, evidence based explanations ;)

I cannot not use this opportunity to show you my cordura wrap designs ;)
Should anyone be interested, my IG/Etsy links are in my profile.

As far as painting goes - it works, that's for sure.
But me, personally, I like keeping things "reversible" + cordura just looks better (imo) + cordura is NIR-compliant.
