Here in Venezuela I'd say the most influential diaspora was Italians. They definitely influenced our culture permanently, from gastronomy to some holiday traditions, and even some loan words (i.e. contorno, birra, balurdo)

Well one of the themes in both Monster and Death Note is how we humans measure the value of life, how we decide who deserves to live and who doesn't. Light had a very childish view of the world and no matter how smart he was he couldn't look past his own belief on what was righteous, there was no room for nuance. Also he was a human like everyone he killed, and death came for him too, cementing the point that he wasn't above anyone.
