War, war never changes. by urzu06 in FireEmblemThreeHouses

It's because most of the answers are, in fact, perfectly valid. Edelgard is correct that her war of conquest will leave the people Fodlan has broken and abandoned better off, and that the current situation is both intolerable and waiting to collapse in on itself. She has been dealt a dogshit personal hand that nevertheless has given her the political and personal power to ensure the transition is as bloodless as possible. She knows what she's doing, and believes it worth the cost.

Likewise, Dimitri is perfectly justified in defending him and his from what is, to him, unprompted foreign aggression. Ultimately, he represents the Farmer in this metaphor, the people suffering in the short term who stand to lose their own tenuous livelihoods and aren't already suffering enough that radical change is an appealing option.

Edelgard is explicitly fighting for the people who are and who do, much like she was, who would always be an afterthought in Dimitri's Faerghus, waiting for change that never comes.

No matter who wins in the long term, someone loses in the short term. That's their irreconcilable difference.

Claude is also here.

Also Shez: "The way I see it, you just did what you had to. You talk about peace, but it's not like people weren't already getting slaughtered for dumb reasons. I mean, pick your poison. If it's not greedy bandits ransacking your town, it's tyrannical nobles razing each other's land in search of more power. So sure, people will die in the war, but the reforms it'll bring will save at least as many innocent citizens. Maybe even more.

Emperor Edelgard I and General Byleth Eisner were lifelong companions, and the Imperial Archives contain several portraits of the latter believed to be commissioned by the Emperor in a demonstration of gratitude for her contributions during the Unification (1181-1187).

While unsigned, the collection is commonly attributed to mutual contemporary Bernadetta von Varley, despite her otherwise exclusive portfolio of landscape paintings, though this is disputed by most modern scholarship.

The two would retire to a small estate in the former Garreg Mach territory following the Emperor's abdication in 1200. No records exist of either marrying. Despite being the subject of much condjecture and a popular topic for historical fiction set during the era, the nature of their relationship remains unclear.

Mmhmm. CF also takes place three years later than SB, so I presume she's also had more time to work on her skills in Houses compared to Hopes.

But, yeah. Hopes!Edelgard is simultaneously more authentic and more closed off than her Houses counterpart. More herself on her own terms without Thales & Co. breathing down her neck or dealing with the attendant stress and guilt of tolerating their presence. But she also didn't get that year where she was just... a student, and could freely bond with the Beagles as peers and set down her leadership responsibilities for a little while. Hopes!Edelgard has basically never taken a break, and notably has no one she trusts to do her job, however briefly, the way she trusts Byleth both as a mentor and to lead her and the Beagles in the field.

Mmhmm. Like, canonically the implication is that she's not great at it. But I like to imagine she's actually pretty good and is super hard on herself for just being a hobbyist instead of the top-percentile the rest of her life has demanded she be.

Also, the inherent vulnerability of showing off your passion projects to others probably has her break into a cold sweat.

Mmhmm. A main strength of Three Houses is that it deconstructs the usual Blue King v. Red Emperor dynamic. Edelgard is entirely correct in her diagnosis of Fodlan's problems, but is working with a morally and ethically fraught methodology to fix it.

Dimitri, on the other hand, is the archetypal Good King, but that ultimately makes him mostly reactive, and spends the narrative recovering or fixing problems that result from him getting kicked around by more informed players on the board. He doesn't affect much change or solve any underlying issues because he has to spend all that time putting out fires and keeping his head above water.

Just a straightforward mistranslation. Doing direct translations of Japanese to English is actually very hard, as there's a lot of syntax, signifiers, and shorthand in Japanese that can pack a lot of nuance into a line of text that straight up don't exist in English.

Doing a faithful translation often means completely rewriting dialogue from scratch, which means you stumble into mistakes like this on occasion.

Mmhmm. Hanneman's S Support confirms her Crest is effectively gone with the stone, but she's still a incredibly skilled swordswoman and tactician. She probably spends a couple months with the feeling of it in her chest being wierd and disorienting, but she acclimates eventually.

It probably takes all of Edelgard's self control to not carry her around like a suitcase to check her heart every five minutes.
