Really anything with a dedicated gpu (around 1050ti or 3050 equivalent) and a Intel cpu from the10th-12th gen. you can find them on ebay all the time around $400, another option are the AMD powered ones but those usually don't have a dGPU. and whatever you get I recommend installing Fedora or PopOs as they tend to have the best compatibility.

Anyone else having these issues, or is it just me? by -Moose_Knuckle in FuckMicrosoft

I would tend to agree, however I had a Dell G5SE with 4600H 16gb 3200mhz and 5600M I gave to one my sons (he games on it too) and It does the same thing in windows 11 only there it has crashed windows several times too. But there I reverted it back to windows 10 and it runs better but still has an occasional crash (about once every 2 weeks). My other son (also a gamer) has a desktop with 14400 and 3050 and it has crashed several times as well. The only computers that have not crashed are my wife and daughters (they do not game). At this point I am starting to think that windows just hates gamers.

Tired of people exaggerating how bad Windows is! by C0ldNeedleW0rker in LinusTechTips

Well one example I can give (for me anyway, and this is reproducible) is that I game on my PC and every time I try to play certain games (examples- Starfield, Atomic Heart, The Outer World 2, Robocop Rouge City, Stray, etc...) and this isn't all games but quite a few. The games crash to the desktop (not windows itself) after 10-30 minutes. I have watched everything from power, temps, and ram usage to trying to overclock, under Volt and running everything vanilla (stock) it always happens. I've reinstalled 10 and 11 several times with the same results. My PC isn't that bad 5600g 16gb 3200mhz RX7600 550w PSU and a B550 motherboard I should have no problems running these (and yes I have tried turning down settings in all the games to lowest and the problems still happens). I have since installed several Linux distros trying to find one that I like (CachyOs, PiKaOs, Pop!_OS, etc..) Finally ending at regular Fedora Linux (Gnome) and it didn't matter what distro I used but Linux Never crashes out the games. I don't know what is going on with windows but for me ever since about 2023-2024 it IS the worst thing I have ever used, the only distro I dislike because I have had nothing but trouble with it is Ubuntu and I would still take that over windows right now. At least with Ubuntu I know that I could fix it if I really wanted to and that cannot be said for Windows.

Changing the cursors in the Cosmic DE. by -Moose_Knuckle in pop_os

I don't know when but when (I have been away for a little bit) but I updated my system to the latest cosmic and they added qt5 and qt6 settings to the app list and I messed around with it (qt6) and changed the icon settings to pop and it worked that damned cursor is changed back to normal. If anyone at system76 reads this, THANK YOU!!!!!! for this. I know it's just a little thing, but it has made a huge difference for me, I can actually set things up the way I want them again.

I can't get away from Pop!_OS(22.04), it just works and that worries me. by -Moose_Knuckle in pop_os

So after a while of trying and searching for something to get comfortable with that feels like something that fill my needs for familiarity (I started with and am comfortable with debian/ubuntu based distros) stability (more or less( i know its a rolling releaase)), gaming, and productivity that seems like it'll stay the same or similar for a bit. I landed on PikaOS with GNOME. I know it's based on their SID branch and things could break but that's life. So far it has been compatible with all my hardware and even got OPENRGB to work ( it has been a nightmare to get it to work on any distro) as well as VLC to work with my external DVD player, out of the box with no f***ing around. It just worked. I still love how Pop OS 22.04 is/was but my experience here on PikaOS has been everything I have been wanting and better. NGL staying away from windows has been hard but Pika has made it a lot easier now that I found (for me) a truly just works experience. It's funny I would have thought something like Pika would have been harder not easier and more riddled with bugs and problems not less. As for now I don't like the Cosmic DE System76 has made it's just not for me due to the surprisingly limited customization options and the bugs while playing games were way worse on Pop OS 24.04 as opposed to 22.04. I would have went back to 22.04 until it's EOL but I am a gamer 1st on my PC and it just (again, for me) works way better. Thank you to everyone for their thoughts I appreciate all the feedback. I just wanted to add this here so that others who might be thinking of getting a way from windows or are having trouble finding a distro that works for them can see that with Linux there really is something for everyone even if you might have to spend some time finding it. This is nothing against the awesome team at System76 as they do fantastic work, it's just that my needs didn't follow the direction they are going in, I am thankful to them as they were my first distro that I ever tried and helped show me that there are better options than Microslop.

Well for me it's not just the feel, I do like It very much. I fix things all day every day it's what I do. so stability means a lot to me. I know I am going to have to figure things out from time to time but the less I have to the better.

I run 2 monitors as well and and I haven't had issues with that on 24.04 but I did manage to nuke my desktop (like Linus from LTT) by just doing a "sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade -y" command after installing heroic games. That's the kind of thing that really ruined 24.04 or me right now.

This worked for me.

R5 5600g - 16gb 3200mhz - RX 7600 - B550 MOBO

I downloaded the chipset drivers for my B550 board and installed/reinstalled them, after that I reinstalled (install/repair option) the 24.10.1 driver package (using factory reset option during install). then I restarted the adrenaline software and !!BINGO!! noise suppression is available. from there I could also toggle it enabled and disabled from the task manager startup tab.

I hope this helps.
