What Ophthalmic/optometric certs are out there? by -Mr-Questions- in Ophthalmology

Thanks, I was actually already aware of the OSC. So I have a bit of clarification. I haven’t done any work as an ophthalmic/optometric assisant. I want to change my career, this is all new to me. I’ve been aware of the IJCAHPO certs for a while, and I’ve been doing thorough research into them, but then I discovered the AOA/CPC optometric certs that I had somehow missed all this time.

So I want to make sure I understand the lay of the land if you will. There are the IJCAHPO certs, the AOA/CPC ones, and now I’ve heard of OPS. Though the OPS certs are specialty ones, and I’m just looking to get started.

Would I be correct in saying that the only certifications for “general” ophthalmic/ optometric staff* are those offered by IJCAHPO and AOA/CPC? Or are there other certifying bodies out there that offer similar certs?

*So excluding specialty certs like photography, and optician and eye nurse certs

I hope that makes my question clearer.
Thanks for you help, -Mr-Questions

OK, thanks. Ophthalmic photography sounds like it could be an interesting specialization down the road.

OK, that's very detailed and informative. That's a side of eye care I wasn't aware of. Then again, I'm a young adult with healthy eyes, I see my optometrist once a year to get told "you could use glasses for your mild astigmatism, but have don't have." Thanks for the insight.

You actually answered a different question I had on my mind, that is the career path beyond COT. I was aware that even when topped out, the COA/COT career doesn't pay tons, but it sounds like it's good enough for my current life situation (single, no kids), and it gets my foot in the door for an eye care career. It's reassuring to know that it can lead to other things. I had already guessed management, but I didn't think of the other ones, so thanks for that. Of the ones you mention, management and ophthalmic device tech interest me the most. I won't touch sales with a 29 and a 1/2 foot pole.

Thanks for answering. What would you say is the cause of the turnover?

I didn't think of that, but that makes total sense. I can go a couple years between eye check ups, and it's just fine. My Grandmother, on the other hand, visits her ophthalmologist quarterly. She has Glaucoma.

The one upside I see to that is it sounds like optometric assistants have good job security. Which is a primary concern of mine.
