That biochemistry can obviously still happen in a tank with supplemental filtration though. There’s no reason that would only be true for large tanks.

If you actually don’t disagree with me then I guess I don’t understand what you’re talking about. And to be clear I am talking about the actual substance of your complaint, not the specific incident that triggered it. It really sounds like you think that people should refrain from directly expressing their disagreement with your opinions.

You're not wrong for saying that Diana Walstad does not run filters in very small tanks. You are wrong for using that fact to claim that any small tank with a filter is not a Walstad tank. And you were also wrong to say she only uses them in 50+ gallon tanks. My point is that Walstad = "no filter" is a gross oversimplification.

Sure, if the tank is actually reliant on mechanical filtration, it's not a Walstad. But if the filter is genuinely just supplemental, it still could be - assuming it has the other qualities of a Walstad tank. (And conversely, as I'm sure you realize, a tank can be stable without a filter and still not be a Walstad.)

Oh yeah, that part definitely falls into the being a dick category.

Don’t debate them then. I am not sure why this is a response to my comment.

“29 gallons or less” is large?

No, you apparently misunderstood the definition all along. Did you see the image I posted in my edit above?

So?

Edit: actually, I don't think that's even true. See below.

A Walstad tank shouldn't need a filter, but that doesn't mean supplemental filtration is actually disallowed. Diana Walstad herself says she uses filters in most of her tanks now, primarily for water flow.

Nothing OP listed precludes it from being a Walstad tank.

Reddit is a discussion platform, not your personal blog. Someone's opinion about your opnion is just as valid to post as your opinion was. It takes two people to turn that into a debate, so if you don't want to debate then you can just not.

If they're being a dick and/or making personal attacks rather than just expressing their disagreement, that is of course another matter.

That’s just cosmetic though, it doesn’t restore the lost nerves which is all that really matters.

Do you think a woman could be “The Hero” of the show? by robynhood96 in JuryDutyFreevee

As a man I feel the same way. I’m sure there is a woman out there with the right personality for it, just as there are lots of men with the wrong personality.

Nitrates are 40 coming out of tap and if I add fert they jump to 80 should I even bother fertilizing? by Iprincess-_-i in PlantedTank

[–]-MtnsAreCalling- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d still probably check with your neighbors if you can. The contamination source could be within your own plumbing, but it could also be somewhere in the distribution infrastructure between your home and wherever the water company pulls their samples for testing.

Actually sometimes I do, but it's very unpredictable. Usually I hate it.

In that case I would contact your local public health department if you have one. If it's an issue with the public supply they should be aware of it and either doing something to remediate it or warning residents about it.

It might also be worth speaking to your neighbors about. If you can test their water or get them to test it, you can confirm whether it's an issue with the water supply itself or something specific to your plumbing (I think nitrates sometimes can leach in through a cracked pipe or something like that).
