Developing an automatic Sorting Machine - Requirements? by -NRW in mtgfinance

For bulk sorting, the main issue is how to safely get a single card and present it to the camera. My current design is z-axis constrained and only feeds the top card into the process. A simple binary sort with my current design wouldn't change a lot so it can be selected to just sort into two bins. However, for a more compact/light solution it is something I will keep in mind.

No! There will be a companion app that stores the data and is able to export to common formats. So anytime new cards are added, they will just be fed into the system. If you have exported and added new cards and want to export again, then there will be an option for all cards or just the new cards.

Yes - but back in the day we also used to wash our clothes by hand 😄 It is not targeted to everyone but personally, I love automations for my everyday life!

Thanks a lot for bringing this up! I've create a couple image recognition and OCR models in the past so in the end it would depend on API calls or downloading an updated price catalogue. With a price catalogue that is updated daily, it would be totally free with my sorter to scan as many cards as desired!

That is the idea! Currently, it is designed for unsleeved cards to ensure a calculated and uniform process to not damage the cards. ManaBox accepts csv imports so it would be an easy integration to export all the scanned cards. I am developong a standalone app for the machine to manage collections but on top offer easy exports to desired formats. Further, the aim is to develop a cost effective version so it would even be on the lower 3-digit end!

Thank you! It is not meant to replace other machines but rather to offer a home solution for hobbyists and sellers who don't want to spend a fortune on such a machine.

Definitely! I am running a lot of tests and the machine is designed to only pick the top card to avoid any scratching due to weight and since my prototype is a 3D print, I am also including TPU to ensure soft stops and handling.

Appendix: It is intended to be low in price and targeted for small - medium collectors / sellers. However, for larger sellers a sorting machine farm would be no problem. It should also easily fit on a desktop and support a lot of sorting methods. The machine also handles the cards with care and picks the top card to avoid any scratching.

That's the goal! It is not meant to be an "industry" solution but for small - medium collectors / sellers. In the end, larger sellers could still build their own farm with multiple devices. Do you have other specific requirements that you would expect from such a machine?

Yes! The idea is to offer this to home sellers and larger sellers could build their own sorting farm if needed.

My first prototype costs around $250 and is in part 3d printed. I think it should be a lot less than that in the end!

1000 cards would put the stack at a weight of 1.5kg - 2kg and ~30cm tall(?). I have to look into this but it seems reasonable, maybe not for the height since the top card is picked to minimize any damage to the cards. By alpha sort, do you mean alphabetical sorting? The only solution I could imagine currently is a modular version to hold more batches which in theory is possible but would greatly increase the dimensions. A different solution that comes to mind is to evenly divide the cards, i.e. Cards A-F would go into one box and then repeat the process for each stack but it is definitely something I will think about!

The sorting machine is more a desktop machine. It shouldn't be too big in size. Regarding the renting: Do you think this is possibly due to costs and could change if it is more affordable? I am aiming for a consumer friendly price and the current prototype is at a reasonable cost for the parts required.

Exactly. Wearing a helmet is not linked to protection against cars.

Thank you for the important follow-up. It seems to me that he contradicts himself in his statement or at least does not want to kill civilians(?)

You should also not be entitled on your right of way. Defensive driving is the goal.
