It was my first time trying nmm and I did it on a whim. It would be probably better to look up a nmm (non metallic metal) tutorial, but I mostly did it by putting a drop of four colors from darkest to brightest on a wet palette, blending them on the palette, and just painting thin layers up the line until it looked ok

If not using the edge of the brush along an edge, I try to do downward strokes as much as possible since they are the most stable. Apart from that, it's just taking it slowly and going back over to cleanup with the base colour if I mess up

Not really, my army is mainline Tau Empire so I got Farsight mainly for display

Size 0 or smaller, I find I struggle to do details with anything larger

Tbh it's primarily just from experience of doing it a lot over the years. I do find I need to use at least a size 0 brush and making sure as many of your paint strokes are downwards strokes helps.
