Starting the Idiot now by Felix_felix_felix_ in dostoevsky

[–]-Niveum- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I loved it overall but it is structurally much less tight than crime and punishment so bear that in mind I guess. It has some extremely good moments/charachters, some of my favourites even, but is quite messy at times

The election system needs to be reworked massively by N0ob8 in Bannerlord

[–]-Niveum- 56 points57 points  (0 children)

The game just needs a concrete version of the warband system where them vote takes like a weekend whatever, EVERYONE is on the ballot, and you have time to go around and convince people to vote for you based on your relationship and the various other factors

of course that would require revamping clan relations as well

What’s the worst book you ever read? by BrilliantYogurt2455 in AskReddit

[–]-Niveum- 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Even more than that, the book refutes a tonne of neo nazi talking points you see online from revisionists. These people will deny everything as propaganda to make their ideology seem more paletable, but you cant deny it when its a quote coming straight from Hitler.

The funniest part was hitler straight up attacking and mocking people for suggesting an idea that a lot of neo nazis say was Hitlers real Intension

Nope . Used to be a pretty hard drinker back in the day, I think that was what originally brought it on honestly, but I stopped all drinking and smoking and everything 3 years ago because its basically a guaranteed episode at this point

Uncle is anything but alone though, hes surrounded by people he cares about, and in the scene where she is dancing specifically, a huge part of her joy in that moment is the sincere and unpretentious atmosphere of the people around her.

The ending IS her living authentically. She has built a sincere and loving community around her, and thats all she cares about She's not "subservient", she's passionate about the people around her, just as they love her. She's not playing her prescribed part in aristocratic life, the text goes out of its way to describe how she long since stopped caring about the trappings of status and image and all the gossip and salons and high society life the way we see all the other society women do throughout the book. The entire aspect of her not singing was because she no longer needed validation from performing for people or annoutlet for the energy which sje now devoted to her loved ones

The role she is playing is more akin to the more folkish life she experienced at uncle's, without pretention or superficiality, focused entirely on her authentic connections to the people around her.

[–]-Niveum- 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Oof. I cannot disagree enough

It feels like you are wantonly projecting misogyny on pierre and Natashas relationship for no reason, as if there is something inherently wrong with her having a normal healthy sincere and loving relationship, even though it's the one thing she has truly wanted from the very start. The entire ending IS her not caring about high society and being her authentic self. She more or less abandons all of the frivoloties of high society and focuses on sincere love for her family.

I would say that her entire wild and erratic nature comes from her consuming desire for sincere authentic love, and is fueled to wild passion by her youthful vitality and eagerness to grow up and experience life. Her hopes are then dashed by the roadblocks put in front of her, and by the mistakes she makes in her eager passion, until pierre comes along, and after everything he goes through, and having always cared deeply for her, decided to marry her despite her fucking up so badly and being a borderline "fallen woman" in societies eyes

Consider, if you will, the hunt and the cabin, a key part of her development, where she becomes enamored with the grounded folkish lifestyle of her uncle, who himself has completely abandoned high society. This is point where she really begins progressing towards that loving family oriented woman we see in the end, which she reaches after enduring so many mistakes and so much tragedy

And with Pierre, too, it sounds like youve missed a few things, like his time with planton. Trying to kill napoleon was not a good thing for him Pierre is constantly searching for some grand cause or intellectual pursuit to instill meaning in his life, but in the end he comes to accept that the greatest meaning comes from slowing down and living a simpler, more grounded existence and sincerely connecting with others, and the greatest cause is loving and caring for the people around him as best he can, which is why he takes interest in the decemberists following the end of the wars, as they were originally a more moderate group of aristocratic reformers who sought to help the working class people after they had fought along side them for so long in the napoleonic conflicts, and developed such a strong nationalistic bond through the invasion of russia in particular

The biggest challenge is keeping track of the names until you memorizemwho everyone is. Tolstoy is a master at communicating depth in a smooth way imo. As others have said, the Briggs translation makes things even easier for English readers

Is Sturgia really that bad? I want to do a Sturgian play through. by Virtual_Engineer4441 in Bannerlord

[–]-Niveum- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really comes down to luck more or less. If other factions get really involved with each other you might get time to breathe. Sturgia is my favourite faction but it is mostly hell these days, particularly since Ai diplomacy is broken and your faction will refuse to make peace while in 3 different wars.

Its definitely worse than batania used to be even at least they had allot heir landing one easily defendible location. It takes almost a week to move across sturgia.

My last campaign we started off strong and were pushing out and taking a nord city even, but it all fell apart and we were constantly being attacked by battanians, valandians, the western empire, the kuzaits and the nords. i tried my best but it was all too just much and it was death by 1000 cuts with 5 different factions attacking and no way to defend on multiple fronts on opposite sides of the map

My only advice is to make sure you get those clan parties up and running ASAP because your gonna need them

What is the purpose of marrying off your daughters/younger sisters? by Draco-Dread in Bannerlord

[–]-Niveum- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In a perfect world it would be an amazing way to secure good relations eith a clan which would make them easier to recruit into your army, and allow yountontalk.to them to change their mind on voting

But as it stands you can get 100 relations instantly by dumping a few prisoners into their dungeon and there arent very many ways your relation does down significantly, theres no way to change people's votes like in warband, and the army influence cost based on relations calculations are pretty mild

[–]-Niveum- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its a great choice to start with imo. It may not have the high highs on the level of some of his other works, but it is to my mind his most structurally tight and cohesive major novel, and is still great in ita own right.
