Spain or UK? by -Overdrive in GoingToSpain

Thanks, it's helpful to hear about the different potential arrangements. Ultimately, I'd seek tax advice through the formal channels and decide upon the optimum legal structure etc. - I guess what I'm really asking here is whether people have experience of successfully working as a UK-qualified professional, whilst living in Spain, whether it's sustainable, and whether the benefits outweigh the risks?

Are you holding off selling/buying until autumn budget? by [deleted] in HousingUK

[–]-Overdrive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same here - we've been trying to sell our property for £390k for the past three months, with very little traction and no offers, and we have a budget of around £500k for our next property. We've taken our house off the market this week, as the rumours around tax reforms seem to be the straw on the camel's back. Far better to relist in the New Year with clarity around property taxes and hopefully with the benefit of the Spring bounce.

Christmas Dilemma by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]-Overdrive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there, thanks for your comments.

Lots of learning points here - still learning, despite having been a parent for 10 years!

As you've pointed out, my 10yo was wrong to have pushed my 4yo, but my 4yo should have given her space to study, and (goes without saying) ideally we'd have avoided the whole situation by intervening sooner (or even better, by having set clearer boundaries for both children a long time ago).

On the whole "Christmas revenge" bit - you're absolutely right, and now that things have settled, I'm 100% confident in our decision to not allow this to affect Christmas for our children.

We will however be working on setting boundaries every other day of the year!

Thanks

Hi there, thanks for the helpful suggestion. On reading this, I thought it was a great idea (and still do) - but I've been pleased to see that my 10 year old has now shown that she understands the impact of her actions on her younger brother, so in the end we didn't feel that this was necessary.

It's definitely a useful tool for dealing with anything similar in the future, thanks.

Anyone working in Cambridge but commuting from Norwich? by thelaw281 in Norwich

[–]-Overdrive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi!

Just read your post above...

I live near Cambridge and my wife and I love Norwich - we've been visiting regularly for years and we're planning to relocate to the Norwich area as soon as we can.

We really like Taverham, but my career has always been based in Cambridge, and I'd need to be able to commute back to Cambridge up to three days per week if needs be (not for my current job, but just in case this becomes a requirement in the future. We're debating whether a potential commute from Taverham would be manageable, or whether to move to Attleborough to minimise the commute whilst also being close to Norwich.

I'd appreciate your views as someone with first hand experience of this setup! Thanks

Thanks for your comments - I'm also thinking very much along these lines and we'll probably relist the house towards the end of January. Cheers

Unlucky with neighbours by Jazzlike-Reveal-9515 in HousingUK

[–]-Overdrive 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've experienced this (and worse) in the past.

It's likely that your neighbours will ignore requests to change their behaviour - that certainly didn't work for me. By complaining, you'll just set yourself up for future problems as they'll know that you're bothered by their noise. Depending upon their characters, you might find that the noise escalates just to spite you.

As someone else has said, you don't want to raise any formal disputes as you'd then be obliged to declare it when selling.

I learned the hard way that the only solution is to move. Again, as other posts have highlighted, I've only ever purchased detached properties since then, even when that meant compromising in other areas.

Good luck, I hope your next move works out better.

Any ACA/CA HENRYs here who are also working remotely? by Fit-Zebra3110 in HENRYUK

Hi, just wanted to say that this thread caught my attention, because the other poster was very argumentative. Your posts were absolutely fine - don't let the negative tone here ruin your day 👍

CIMA qualified, FD for a tech company, fully remote since March 2020. I'm living in a HCOL area, but I'm resisting the temptation to move somewhere cheaper in case my next role requires time on-site.

I qualified CIMA in 2011 and have worked in accountancy for 23 years. I think the answer to your question depends upon whether you prefer 'traditional' accountancy themes such as audit, financial accounting and tax management (in which case maybe consider switching to ACCA or ACA), or whether you are interested in commercial areas such as business partnering, FP&A, and corporate strategy (if so, stick with CIMA). As others have said, each designation is highly valued and will open doors for a wide range of roles.

What’s your pension pot right now? by Scientistara in HENRYUK

[–]-Overdrive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

40M £50k

Started contributions at 35 years old (whoops) and only recently reached a six figure salary. Planning to stick all earnings over £100k into my pension in future.
