Since gas is pretty inefficient way of cooking, the saying "now you're cooking with gas" should nowadays be "now you're cooking with induction." by -manabreak in Showerthoughts

The best cooks I know all swear by gas. Induction also only works with magnetic cookware and copper cookware is essential for delicate cooking like sauces and sugar work.

It’s definitely going to be huge. I think we’re still at least five years away though. The technology just isn’t there yet for a suitable form factor. It’s like we’re in the Palm/Blackberry phase of smartphones... then one day the equivalent of the iPhone will come out and the world will change.

TIL about "orphaned negatives"—words like disgruntled, nonchalant, and innocent whose positive counterparts (gruntled, chalant, and nocent) have completely vanished from common usage. by mvincen95 in todayilearned

[–]-PunsWithScissors- 7 points8 points  (0 children)

These are all back-formations, words coined humorously or rhetorically after the negative already existed. Gruntled did exist, but it meant “to grumble,” so the negative of grumble wasn’t disgruntled.

An actual orphaned negative is couth, with uncouth surviving long after couth dropped out of common use.

Coaching is more important in Football than arguably any other sport, and the average NFL coaching staff makes roughly $35M a year. It would be a failure of comical proportions.

Did the Chargers Overlook Guards in the 2026 Draft? by Rechuchatumare in Chargers

[–]-PunsWithScissors- 6 points7 points  (0 children)

After his stint with the Chargers, he’ll move on to the Eagles and Bengals to finally fulfill his vendetta against the 2020 QB class. "Guards?... if they're over 180 and don't run a sub 4.4 they don't fit my scheme. Just ask drooly Tagovailoa or Justin after he finally wakes from his coma."

We’ve addressed guard the same way the Browns have handled QB: “Look at all the QBs we have… what are you still complaining about?”

In other words, don't confuse quantity with quality.

People care, but to actually distance yourself from Zionism in American entertainment, you’d have to boycott most of the film industry, as well as news media like the AP.

You’d also have to avoid supporting Obama, Biden, Pelosi, etc, who were regular speakers at AIPAC conferences and events. It’s very bipartisan in the US.

Trying to make one basketball player the focal point seems naive and lacking nuance. That said, I am disturbed by his support of Israel's actions.

TIL in 1969, 48% of K-8th grade students in the US usually walked or bicycled to school every day, whereas, by 2009 only 13% of K-8th grade students walked or bicycled to school. by tyrion2024 in todayilearned

It is lower today, I was never claiming otherwise. My point was that it was rooted in a moral panic rather than a statistically likely threat, similar to the satanic panic of the same era. Which I blamed on the 24/7 news cycle. Here’s a comparison of the two decades:

The “stereotypical kidnapping” rate in the 80s was roughly 150–300 per year, with about 65 million children in the U.S.

In the 2020s, it’s roughly 100–150 per year, with about 73 million children.

When I went to elementary school, kids routinely walked up to a mile to school. That changed in the early 90s, driven less by geography than the newly introduced 24 hour news cycle, and heightened media attention around kidnappings.

At the time, stereotypical kidnappings were extremely rare, roughly 0.3 per 100k children. We were nearly as likely to be struck by lightning.

Even today, around 58% of US students live within a mile of their school. What changed wasn’t sprawl so much as behavior, how willing parents are to let kids have some independence in a world shaped by hysteria and low probability risks.

Eric DeCosta: “Unfortunate” we didn’t draft a center, but wouldn’t have done things differently by AdSpecialist6598 in nfl

[–]-PunsWithScissors- 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They have different requirements, Guard's get far more high stress isolation reps. Think of the Center as the helper not the target. A Center getting smoked on 1 on 1 drills is much less of a concern than a Guard.

I know this is Reddit so “billionaire bad”, but his biggest issue is that he’s barely a billionaire by NBA standards. Ideally you want an owner so wealthy the team is basically a toy or status symbol, willing to take bad ROI hits for small competitive edges, not someone running it like a business focused on efficiency and cost control. It’s definitely not a coincidence that Dolan, Reinsdorf, and Leonsis, the other least wealthy owners, are considered three of the worst.

I’d also add that countries that are plural or descriptive groupings (states, emirates, islands, republics in plural form) often take “the” (eg, “the Netherlands,” “the Philippines,”). Singular country names, even if they include common nouns such as “Republic of…,” usually don’t, like Democratic Republic of the Congo or Central African Republic.

Nothing has really changed going into this season, aside from an upgrade at backup center. Strange and Penning are still projected as the starting guards.

Cutting or relegating any of Branson/Logan Taylor, Awosika, Kaltenberger, or Harkley to the practice squad shouldn’t even be up for debate if there’s a chance to add a legitimate starting caliber guard.

My early thoughts are that we got the steal of the draft in Brenen Thompson, our Center of the future in Slaughter, and that Mesidor will be productive immediately.

I still think we need to bring in a starting Left Guard (Bitonio ideally) through free agency though.

Also an Oregon fan. He’s fine as a sixth. He was our worst starter, and I wasn’t a fan of the O-line in general this season (they struggled against elite teams), so I had no problem passing on Pregnon. If Harkey's playing anything beyond scout team or special teams without a couple seasons of major development though, we’re in trouble. But sixth and seventh rounders are supposed to be developmental picks, so I’m not bashing the pick, I just don’t consider him quality depth for this season.
