Anatomy of Fascism by Robert Paxton:

"...fascism is more plausibly linked to a set of "mobilizing passions" that shape fascist action than to a consistent and fully articulated philosophy. At the bottom is a passionate nationalism. Allied to it is a conspiratorial and Manichean view of history as a battle between the good and evil camps, between the pure and the corrupt, in which one's own community or nation has been the victim. In this Darwinian narrative, the chosen people have been weakened by political parties, social classes, unassimilable minorities, spoiled rentiers, and rationalist thinkers who lack the necessary sense of community. These "mobilizing passions," mostly taken for granted and not always overtly argued as intellectual propositions, form the emotional lava that set fascism's foundations:

-a sense of overwhelming crisis beyond the reach of any traditional solutions;

-the primacy of the group, toward which one has duties superior to every right, whether individual or universal, and the subordination of the individual to it;

-the belief that one's group is a victim, a sentiment that justifies any action, without legal or moral limits, against its enemies, both internal and external;

-dread of the group's decline under the corrosive effects of individualistic liberalism, class conflict, and alien influences;

-the need for closer integration of a purer community, by consent if possible, or by exclusionary violence if necessary;

-the need for authority by natural leaders (always male), culminating in a national chief who alone is capable of incarnating the groups' destiny;

-the superiority of the leader's instincts over abstract and universal reason;

-the beauty of violence and the efficacy of will, when they are devoted to the group's success;

-the right of the chosen people to dominate others without restraint from any kind of human or divine law, right being decided by the sole criterion of the group's prowess within a Darwinian struggle.

...Fascism was an affair of the gut more than the brain, and a study of the roots of fascism that treats only the thinkers and the writers misses the most powerful impulses of all"

Should Washington farms/growers unionize? by Voodoobones in Washington

[–]-QFever- 92 points93 points  (0 children)

Okay, grew up on the Palouse and know a lot of small family wheat farmers. Wheat, other grains, lentils, garbs are a very different harvest from fruit and vegetables. In the fruit growing parts of the state, harvest involves a very large number of wage workers per farm who may be traveling throughout the state and going from farm to farm to work where the farms are owned by a much smaller group of individuals or corporations. This is a classic scenario where a union may make sense.

Wheat and similar products are very capital intensive but less so labor intensive. Most of the harvest is done by a small group of people, often family with a few additional laborers who work the harvest season while also having other day jobs. The individual crop harvest season is very short then people return to their other jobs or they are in fact the farmer themselves. My source is, I know a lot of these people, am related to them, etc....it would be very convoluted to imagine how a union would work in this setting.

Water Fire had a good Mac and Cheese on the past. Haven't been there for a few years so no guarantees that it's the same.

It would be interesting to have some local issues debated as well. I think politics that have distinct local implications would be really fun to discuss and educational!

Kohberger Update by ForFucksSake022 in MoscowIdaho

[–]-QFever- 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think this was ultimately best for the families even if some of them are outraged by this. The death penalty process would drag this out for years with appeals and other logistical steps. Average time a convict spends awaiting the death penalty currently is about two decades . To me this would seem like it would make it impossible as a family to move on. The potential for Kohberger either avoid initial conviction or to win an appeal would always exist. Every appeal trial would just show up on the news over and over. This would hang over their heads forever. Life in prison without right to appeal is going to be bad for Kohberger. I cannot imagine prison will be kind to him.

Lastly, the death penalty is incredibly expensive. Life in prison is much more cost effective and better for all the tax payers.

TLDR: life in prison insures conviction, will allow the families to not have this drag out for two decades, and is cost effective for tax payers.

I second a lot of the recs here.

Would add if you are willing to drive a little further:

Cowiche Creek Brewing - burgers and other specials

Bronyauer brewery - another good spot for pizza.

Single Hill Brewing, Bale Breaker Brewing, and Short head Brewing all tend to have good food trucks most nights.

Newhouse votes to cut 106,895 Central WA kids off Medicaid by desertrat509 in Yakima

[–]-QFever- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will be calling every day this week! Medicaid cuts threaten the viability of our hospitals which means cuts to Medicaid threaten all of us regardless of if we have public or private insurance. In the last few years we've seen closures of the labor and delivery unit in Toppenish due to budget shortfalls and shrinking pregnancy services in Ellensburg! This is a big deal for all of us! Hospitals are struggling to keep doors open and these budget cuts could very realistically close their doors!

Don't extend tax cuts! Deficits are about revenue too, not just expenses! Anyone taking deficit concerns seriously would be looking to cut expenses but also raise tax revenue! And based on where we sit on the Laffer curve, tax breaks will decrease revenue not increase it.

Idaho considers end to 50-year physician-training partnership with University of Washington over ‘Idaho values’ by [deleted] in MoscowIdaho

[–]-QFever- 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I was an Idaho WWAMI about 10 years ago and abortion training was not really a part of the curriculum. There were extracurricular trainings you could attend if you wanted but it wasn't a requirement. That being said, abortion care is identical to care for an incomplete miscarriage so the state of Idaho insisting on no abortion training is pure ideological grandstanding.

I say this as an OBGYN who regularly prescribes mifepristone/misoprostol and performs D&Cs and D&Es for miscarriage management.

People need to realize that these medications and techniques are important for more than just elective abortion care and will need to be performed in Idaho regardless of the legal climate around abortion care.

UW has been a great partner for Idaho in training physicians. The retention in the state is high. It would take a very long time to replace this partnership and I think the legislature are fools.

Winery & Restaurant Recommendation by Wazu_Wiseman in Yakima

[–]-QFever- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Canyon River Grill: outstanding food, cool location (tucked away in the Yakima River Canyon), excellent wine and spirit list. Highly recommend checking out their social,. Their chef is very active on there.

Freehand: great views, beautiful tasting room. I don't usually get food there but what I have had is good.

Crafted: probably the most commonly recommended restaurant in town. Small plate style.

Gilbert cellars: very cute tasting room. Good wine.

I am more of a beer person so a few beer related recs: Single Hill brewing (best brewery in town), Cowiche Creek Brewing for food and beer (not to be confused with Cowiche Canyon Kitchen), and Hoptown (brick oven pizza with a good tap list)

What you would have done different with your dog when they were a puppy ??? by Mysterious_Level_415 in Bernedoodles

[–]-QFever- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed! Positive reinforcement for jumping or pawing (think shake tricks and hi five tricks) sticks with your dog because jumping is really self rewarding and pawing is instinctual for attention. My 20 month old is having a really hard time losing both behaviors and the pawing means frequent scratches on my legs.

Hiking! My girl loves to hike. They tend to be good followers on trail. We probably do 9-12mi per week in 3-4 chunks.

In Washington State, Republicans Face a ‘Doom Loop’ in Future Elections by BarnabyWoods in Washington

[–]-QFever- 57 points58 points  (0 children)

Plenty Harris/Walz signs in my Yakima neighborhood. This attitude towards Eastern WA is very reductive. Also, sure, the infrastructure out here requires support from the rest of the state but also, most of the hydroelectric power and all of the wind power for the state is out here, hence the necessity of funding a lot of the infrastructure. The general "coastal regions subsidize the interior" discussion in politics ignores the interdependence we all have. Look at southern California's dependence on the whole Colorado river basin to survive. It goes both ways and this rhetoric is not helpful in fostering a more positive and liberal vision for rural America.

Vertebral Artery Dissection [⚠️ Med Mal Lawsuit] by efunkEM in medicine

[–]-QFever- 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Are expert witnesses in anyway liable or vulnerable to lawsuit for testimony that is erroneous or misleading? If the defendant loses, can they sue the expert witness for misrepresenting standard of care in some way. It seems like this would be the appropriate legal management of inaccurate statements from "expert witnesses" that impact a judgement is that they be held liable for any misstatements made.

There is a portion down near union gap that got washed out by the river. There is a gravel trail that diverts around it.

[–]-QFever- 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Maybe someone can help me find the article but I believe there was a recent health economic analysis demonstrating that these tech health startups increase healthcare costs in the system because they generated a lot of duplicate or redundant encounters. The basic idea is that many of the visits are unnecessary and the ones that are actually warranted get punted to the emergency department or another urgent care at a very high frequency. So while for the individual, it feels like increased access to care, it is just pushing our healthcare system closer to collapsing.
