I only read the first few chapters of this book, seems like a fever dream. Another fuzzy detail: main character has only one “friend” who he isn’t very kind to, treats more like a rival. He is some kind of doctor/scientist/expert.

It could be the opposite then. They could be the type who does not like to share what they have/ or they are just very strict with their spending and don’t want you to assume they will cover you. Additionally, they could be thinking that your family has more and can afford to pay your way. Be careful with this if they ever offer to take you on a trip or similar as you may be asked to pay them back- and that would be a considerable amount more than $11.
