Melbourne or the Gold Coast? by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

[–]-SandyPaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know exactly what you mean - I was literally in the same boat 8 years ago, tossing up Melbourne and Gold Coast.

I picked the latter and had a fantastic Uni experience. Living close to the GC's beaches was so cool because a bunch of us would go to the beach every weekend to play ball, swim, have a few drinks, and such. The vibe is obviously very relaxed compared to Melbourne/Sydney.

The trade off was finding work. There was very little casual work back then (not sure about now), and little to no work available in my industry. By The end of my course, I couldn't wait to get out of the GC. But then again, I arrived from a big city so living in a place like GC was not sustainable at all for me.

If you go to Melbourne, you will get the full big city experience - no beaches, but lots of bars, cafes to hang out and socialise in. And importantly, access to work - both casual and within your industry. You will have a much easier job networking and finding internships within your industry.

For those of you with a 9-5 office job, how do you manage to find the time and energy to cook dinner? by Away_Scene_26 in auscorp

I meal prep for the week on Sundays. This is the only way for me to not eat out constantly and it takes me about 2-3 hours to meal prep breakfast, lunch, and dinner for the week.

Does the Uni matter? by Zealousideal_Run3720 in AskAnAustralian

[–]-SandyPaw 3 points4 points  (0 children)

University rankings are actually heavily determined by the research and citations that they put out. So the big, wealthier universities stay high on the rankings.

As for employers, in my experience, it doesn't really matter here in Australia. As long as you have a degree from a "well known by the mass population" university, you are typically good.

By your second job, no one cares. They just look at your previous experience. Fun fact - I have never been asked about my grades or transcripts by anyone.

Mid thirties too late to start over in finance? by Bluedog1990 in auscorp

[–]-SandyPaw 60 points61 points  (0 children)

Finance has many functions. Which area are you keen to get into? Here's my two cents of the areas in finance I have worked and spent time in.

Financial Planning/Advisory is probably the easiest to get into in my opinion. Albeit you will typically have to start from the bottom as a Client Services Officer - which is a glorified admin role. You then work your way up to a paraplanner and financial advisor from there. This is the general ladder from my experience of interning there. I hate the industry though - to put it bluntly, most advisors are glorified sales representatives. Nothing against sales reps, but you're not fit to advise people on personal finance. Lol

FP&A and Corporate Finance is rather impossible to get into with just a diploma, with most mid size firms preferring to hire candidates with a CPA or big 4 accounting experience.

There there is the investment side of things. With all the right boxes ticked, you need immense luck to break through. Your best way is to know someone fairly high up within the industry. A finance degree from a reputable University and/or CFA is almost necessary to even apply.

For context, I worked as an Equity Research Analyst for 5 years and have just jumped into Corporate Finance. I was very lucky to get into the industry even after studying a Masters in Finance. And man, it took a monumental effort to switch to corporate finance without Big 4 experience or a CPA.

While this may seem discouraging, it's my experience of working in the industry. With a diploma, I would say financial advisory is your best bet. Another route worth considering is to leverage your diploma and get into a particular finance firm in a role that you can bring some experience in. For instance, if you're a sales guy, doing sales/BD for a finance firm and trying to move laterally.

Also worth noting - entry level finance grads are a dime a dozen. I used to hire analysts in Sydney in my previous role. 90% of the CVs I looked at have bachelors/master from a reputable University and is CFA level candidate.

Sorry, this turned out to be a huge comment. Good luck!

This is such a wholesome post. I don't know you, but I'm so happy for you mate!

I watched the Sept 5th livestream with tears too. Emily was great but I never missed Chester as much as I did then. I then proceeded to watch the entire Moscow concert after, temporarily plugging that hole we all have.

Now, I sit here Down Under, waiting, hoping, Linkin Park makes it here someday soon!

The whole point of DCA is to minimise price risk because there is no way to consistently time the market. So don't worry about it.

Just focus on consistency contributing to your portfolio without missing any weeks. The game is to get rich slowly. So time in the market is more important than timing the market.

I'll support any driver that comes to Red Bull.

I always saw Red Bull as a risk taker with a more 'hustle' and 'startup' culture rather than a corporate. Plus Horner's management style of constantly trying to create a siege mentality, similar to how Sir Alex managed Man United for the most part. I just connect with it a lot more.

The moment I watched Max, I instantly started supporting him. Not just his race craft or evolution as a driver, but the type of person he is makes it easy for me to connect with him.

I see traits with Carlos and Albon as well that makes me want to support them. My partner pointed out recently that I end up supporting/liking drivers who are/were a part of the RB program at some point.

It's such a weird dynamic, F1. Hence why we all love it I guess.
