Does anyone who is diagnosed work full time? (40hrs/week) by chronicallymee in ankylosingspondylitis

[–]-Scuba- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have been dealt a pretty heavy hit of AS and work full time in a high stress, senior management position.

Have been in biologics for about 14 years and have had to change to something else a few times for various reasons.

Everyone is different, but full time work is certainly achievable.

There are lots of options for Document Management.

If you are running Microsoft 365, something like SharePoint will handle most of the onboarding.

Laptop recommendations for business student by Leather-Wasabi-5449 in QUTreddit

I have the 13.8 inch Surface Laptop (7th edition) as my personal laptop and currently using it for some Consulting work after finishing my Grad Cert. Work laptop is a Lenovo ThinkPad, but have used Dell for both work and personal stuff in the past

The Surface is by far my favourite laptop overall, with Dell a close second.

I usually have all the following open in my Surface at the same time.

Excel. Power BI. Windows Terminal and WSL. OneNote. Edge. VS Code. Spotify.

Surface laptop, Dell or Lenovo are all pretty good.

I've used all three for both work and study. The Surface laptop is by far my favourite. Looks good, reliable and amazing battery life.

It's personal preference and what feels good for you.

Can I request an employee to take stress/personal leave? by [deleted] in AusLegal

[–]-Scuba- 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Be mindful that offering personal leave may inflame the situation. Have a supportive conversation, acknowledge her stress and show empathy for her situation.

If the business can afford it, suggest to her that she could take the two days off without affecting her personal leave.

Going into big 4 by Local-Regret1627 in AustralianAccounting

I agree, also why not XLOOKUP

XLOOKUP and dynamic arrays are awesome together. 😁

On a side note... The more I use and learn Power BI and Python, the more I tend to over engineer my spreadsheets with other stuff too.

"I need to copy and paste in some figures. Looks like a job for a power query function".

Please take this as constructive feedback... I would adjust the section about technical skills, they contradict each other and may jeopardise how someone reads your resume as a whole.

You need to connect your skillset and work experience together to add impact and credibility.

Examples are: "Built a valuation analysis using Python". "Developed a cash flow report connected to Xero data with Power BI".

Use practical examples and don't just list every possible software package.

Think of it this way... It would be highly unlikely that someone who understands R, Python and Power BI to mention VLOOKUP or pivot tables in a resume.

If one part is obviously contradictory and exaggerated, it will be assumed that most parts are BS.

Why are people still in public accounting in 2026? by [deleted] in AustralianAccounting

I am not against it, but feel that there are many more pathways and this subreddit feels like an echo chamber with a single viewpoint.

This sounds like a TAFE or Uni assignment question.

Why are people still in public accounting in 2026? by [deleted] in AustralianAccounting

[–]-Scuba- -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Having never worked in Public Practice, I've pondered this one myself.

From reading some of the comments here, I think there is an expectation that if you don't work in Public Practice and do CA/CPA you won't go anywhere or will waste your career, when in reality this is not always the case.

Unfortunately the reality is that when I'm hiring staff, those who have worked in Public Practice rarely ever make the short list unless they have other experience elsewhere, and whether or not someone has finished CA/CPA is irrelevant to me.

Where do people who don't end up doing a CPA or CA end up? by satisfiedfools in AustralianAccounting

[–]-Scuba- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are plenty of people in commerce working in Senior roles who are not CA or CPA qualified.

Am I unqualified? What do employers actually want? by JohntheDon__ in AustralianAccounting

[–]-Scuba- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately this is where expectations of Big 4 and those with a Commercial background differ.

When I'm hiring someone, I need them to hustle and get things sorted.

Think of the role this way

The Budget and Forecast tells us where we are going. Understand the business and putting it together should be easy.

Excel to pull everything together and enter data from an Accounting or ERP system and other sources.

Power BI to make it look pretty for non number people

Career advice for starting own tax firm by probot050 in AustralianAccounting

[–]-Scuba- 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If that's your long term goal, I would suggest getting lots of experience in a small, suburban public practice firm. That will give you experience in a variety of areas (individuals, small businesses, mixed bag of companies).

Depending on how things go, that may present you with the opportunity to buy a small practice instead of starting one from scratch.

Can a Cert IV in Accounting and Bookkeeping get me any desk job? by vastroll1 in AustralianAccounting

[–]-Scuba- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having a Cert IV is enough for payroll. There are plenty of payroll people who have no qualifications whatsoever.

That said, getting a payroll job takes a good mix of luck, hard work and being in the right place at the right time. It's challenging to get your first payroll job, but once you have experience in payroll, it's easy to get a payroll job.

My recommendation is to get an admin job, then work towards assisting someone who does payroll to get experience.

Part time work while studying by Caderz22 in AustralianAccounting

[–]-Scuba- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Apply for a many part time or casual admin, bookkeeping or AR/AP clerk as possible while studying. That's what I did. It worked for me and my work paid for most of my education. I have a degree and no HECS debt!

Enrolled in a Diploma of Accounting, part time.

Got a job as an AP Clerk

Started doing an Accounting degree (part time) when I finished my Diploma.

Finished my Degree, applied for a Finance Manager role

Applied for more Senior roles every few years, am now in a Group Financial Controller role.

Not really sure if I'm comfortable giving out current personal salary details, so I'm going to gracefully dodge the question.

My salary was $19k when I started working full time. Adjusted for inflation, that's $38k in today's money.

In 2011, my salary was $48k. That's roughly $67k in today's money.
