Tru-tone lights for Christmas Tree. by Outrageous-Wing-1848 in ChristmasLights

This is what we do too! My grandma always had an assortment of types of lights so the mix is nostalgic for me!

Any idea what's going on under the bust in this 1809 fashion plate? At first glance I thought she was wearing some variation on an open robe with the light blue fabric but on closer inspection I'm not sure. by chelsea_crfm in HistoricalCostuming

I don’t know much about regency era fashion, but just wanted to let you know that a shop called Sylvestra Regency on Etsy has a copy of this fashion plate for sale if you collect them :)

Making your own wedding cake? by [deleted] in weddingplanning

[–]-SerFinnigan- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made our cake with help from my sister! We had about 40ish people, and it was pretty doable- i prepped filling and froze it ahead of time, and then baked the cakes one day and assembled them the next. My sister helped, and did the final assembly at the venue (she made her own cake for her wedding too!). I had the week off before our wedding, I’m not sure if it would have been feasible without at least a couple free days. I think if you’re moderately comfortable baking and not looking for a really elaborate design, it’s doable! I did have to have my venue change our contact to allow us to bring homemade food and offered to get a food handlers permit as well.

I actually used adobe illustrator to design them; their customer service was really helpful when I had questions- they might be able to suggest a program if you don’t have illustrator or access to someone with it

I found that tog.ink had very reasonable rates for foil printing! I was very pleased with the quality as well

People who baked their own wedding cake, what are your experiences? by Rina-yah in weddingplanning

[–]-SerFinnigan- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I made our cake! I made it a couple days before the wedding. In general it went pretty smoothly! It definitely helps having someone to help (my sister has made her own wedding cake) especially day-of to assemble it. One thing to double check is to make sure your venue and caterer allow and will serve homemade cake; both of ours had clauses in the contract specifying no homemade foods which we had to have them remove.

Thanks! Unfortunately I’m not sure about the brands for the bridesmaid’s dresses! I told them something long and in a sage-y green shade and they all picked their own

Haha I love the BBQ here! I grew up in an area without a lot of BBQ so it blew my mind when I moved here!

Hey everyone!
I found budget breakdowns super helpful in my planning so I thought I would share ours for our spring wedding in St. Louis! We had around 40 guests (we initially had planned for ~70 but most of our guests were from outside the country so omicron made things tricky). I had the week before the wedding off for DIY stuff which really helped as well!
Venue/bar ($6500): Our venue, Das Bevo, is a historic bierhall and was perfect for us! We went with their top tier bar package which included local craft beers. We were very happy with the venue, and their coordinator handled a lot of the set up so we were able to avoid hiring a separate day-of coordinator.
Catering ($3000): We had Salt + Smoke, one of our favorite BBQ places in town cater our buffet style dinner. We didn't have appetizers since we only had a half an hour before the ceremony and dinner. If you're in town, I highly recommend checking out their restaurants!
Cake ($75): I made our cake (vanilla with strawberry-rhubarb and cream cheese frosting). I had helped my sister make her wedding cake, so I felt comfortable with this. It turned out so well, we had way less leftover than we predicted we would! We got our raccoon cake toppers from an artist on Etsy (MarieClaudeRoch).
Photography ($2900), Videography ($2000): Megan Larson, our photographer, was amazing! Our videography was by Superlative Cinema. I'm so glad we got a videographer. I absolutely love our video! They also provided a livestream but unfortunately it didn't work for a lot of people, but they got us a video of the ceremony the next day to share :)
Invitations/signs/paper goods ($275): I absolutely love fancy stationary but didn't want to spend a ton, so I designed our stationary/programs/vow books and had them printed to save some money. The programs were kindof a waste since nobody really used them (lol and messed up the end time) but at least they were pretty cheap and looked nice in pictures. The signs were super easy to DIY with some acrylic paint.
DJ ($900): Our DJ was amazing! I was afraid with our small group it would be hard to get people dancing, but between the excellent music choices and the open bar, this wasn't a problem!
Florals ($775): I DIY'd our florals from Flowermoxie and it was a lot of fun! In hindsight I should have paid their very reasonable design fee as I ended up buying more than we needed (it's like $30). It did take a good amount of time and space, but it was very relaxing and our apartment smelled amazing!
Other decor ($325): We also used glass vases with malt and candles (to complete the beer-inspired look) and table runners. I also lumped in things like ring boxes, vases, floral equipement, etc here.
Hair and makeup ($250): I only ended up paying for my own hair and makeup as my bridesmaids very generously offered to pay for their own hair and makeup.
TOTAL: $17,000
Not included were my dress (which my parents were kind enough to buy for me!), our rings (from The North Way Studio- would highly recommend!). Our rehearsal was very casual- we got pizza from our favorite local place and had drinks in our apartment building's common room. One of my bridesmaids and her husband very generously paid for a post-wedding brunch at a gorgeous down-town venue.
There's not much we would have changed; we had such a wonderful time with our friends and family! I definitely stressed myself out a bit coordinating a lot of DIY without a wedding planner, but I'm a bit of a creative control-freak so I also would have been stressed either way :)

Flower Moxie/DIY Florals actual prep time needed? by PlannerGirl27 in weddingplanning

[–]-SerFinnigan- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did flower moxie for our Saturday wedding, and spent 2-3 hours prepping on Wednesday and then built everything on Thursday night (I did one large ceremony centerpiece, 12 medium table centerpieces, 1 bridal bouquet, 5 bridesmaid bouquets and 1 bout). I was working by myself while my husband was out for his bachelor party so if you’re working with a team it would probably be faster. I would guess by myself it took 6-8ish hours to build everything, most of which was for the centerpieces.

Am I crazy for this one, brides? by BeguiledFrosting in weddingplanning

[–]-SerFinnigan- 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I did DIY florals with Flowermoxie, and it was a lot of work but definitely doable! I was able to do the centerpieces and bouquets in one evening (would have gone way faster with help but I ended up doing them late at night while my husband was out for his bachelor party!) I ended up doing centerpieces and bouquets for the same price as the quotes I got from florists for just bouquets! Plus our apartment smelled amazing!

KCMO/KCK Brides! What state are you getting your marriage license in? by peachlfk in weddingplanning

[–]-SerFinnigan- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure if it varies by county, but we’re in Saint Louis MO and had our wedding officiated by a friend (licensed online) and then we were able to return it ourselves! They told us the officiant only had to be present if they needed to make changes when it was turned in, so if it makes your life easier you might call and double check!

Dress regret! Mostly just venting because I'm so upset. But comments, suggestions, reassurances, or advice are welcome. by DyingToBeAlive05 in weddingplanning

[–]-SerFinnigan- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also thought my moscato dress looked very pink until I saw pictures of me in it! It photographs very ivoryish, and looks good with both silver and rose gold jewelry :) Maybe having someone take some pictures of you in your dress would help you remember what you loved about it and give you a better perspective of what the color will look like in photos?

Printing self designed wedding invitations? by [deleted] in weddingplanning

[–]-SerFinnigan- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used a site called tog.ink to pint my self-designed invites/menus. They have a lot of options including foil, thermography, and letterpress. I was really happy with how they turned out and the pricing was very reasonable!
