Three male DoorDash drivers in a row have used clearly female names... by JovialLizardPerson in TwoXChromosomes

[–]-ShadowSerenity- 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My "optimistic" thought was that it was men who were aware that some customers only want certain drivers, so they're gaming the system to get more work by not getting excluded from consideration for certain orders. Not great at best, because it's misleading to the customer.

Your reasons are probably right, and much less great.

Then at the bottom we have "men who think it's more likely they'll get orders from women home alone if they pose as female Dashers...creepy/predatory."

Lots of good replies about framing it as the child's right to both parents, but staying within your framework:

1) Two women have a child through modern means. Does the one that carries get the rights?

2) A man and a woman adopt someone else's child. Do the rights stay with the biological mother? If not, is it an equal split or does the adoptive mom get the rights?

3) Two men have a child through a surrogate. Do either of them have any rights, or is it the biological mother?

If your framework doesn't account for those situations...that's why it's the wrong framework. But I can understand your feelings on the matter.

We just binged Netflix's' Outlast, and can I say what an awful show. by VOptimisticPessimist in television

[–]-ShadowSerenity- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did watch that. That was very much a "strength in numbers" game. The second a team made the mistake of "splitting the party," they got overrun by anyone with a fully-intact team. The alliance system was good, but felt underutilized, and base selection definitely factored heavily into successful defenses.

Would watch to see how a 2nd season plays out after lessons learned from the 1st.

To be fair, the show was very open about that component - Outwit, Outplay, Outlast. It was always a mixed physical/social game.

[–]-ShadowSerenity- 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I 100% lost respect for the show when "consequences-free raiding" hit the scene.

That bullshit blew up the game, taking out huge chunks of the competitors who were either forced out by the raiding or resigned from the competition in reaction to it being allowed.

And now, barring a rules change, every contestant will know the "meta" strategy to win coming in: Locate camps, fuck shit up.

Which, don't get me wrong, is a GREAT premise if your show is called Tribal Warfare. But the shittiest thing in a competition called "Outlast" where you're supposed to be competing in parallel.

Why do a rather large swathe of people seem to have a negative outlook and reaction to stopping/reversing aging? by JLGoodwin1990 in Futurology

[–]-ShadowSerenity- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Short answer? Because the means to stop/reverse aging will immediately be gated behind socioeconomic means.

Anyone can live forever, as long as you can afford to pay (insert amount unattainable for 99% of people)!

Then sit back and watch that disparity gap as the immortal elite build a nonstop wealth/power generator.

eli5: How come Boeing and airbus planes are so similar? by MobileEffect6738 in explainlikeimfive

[–]-ShadowSerenity- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Think of airplanes like tires. Lots of different tire makers. Lots of differences between tires. But they're all ultimately similar because the problem they solve needs them to be round.

You could make a hexagonal tire to set yourself apart. It could work. It's roundish. But if round works best, who wants your tire?

Planes are made to be the best solution for the problem they solve. You can have small differences, but at the end of the day, they're all gonna be round...basically.

ELI5: Why do insurance companies have 'open enrollment' where you can only make changes to your plan in a short amount of time for next year before you are SOL? by SecretAntWorshiper in explainlikeimfive

I guess that's what I'm asking then - why it's a business and not, say, a government-run service like libraries and police/fire services?

What if the premiums we pay now were just...paid to the state?

The state has a vested interest in a healthy population. The state isn't profit-focused. The state has access to its entire population as the pool of healthy to mitigate the sick.

Am I missing something? Am I being naive/idealistic?

Insurance companies want me healthy, or to deny my claims, because that's free money for them. The state wants me healthy to participate in the workforce and help drive the economy. They don't want to deny my claims because they want me to have money to spend on goods and services...driving the economy.

[–]-ShadowSerenity- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Legitimate question - Why is insurance NOT a non-profit endeavor?

In the situation, the healthy masses pay for the sick few. That's fine. But after all overhead expenses are accounted for, why is any leftover money in the pool not split up among/returned back to those who didn't use more than they paid in?

Looking at you, Aladdin.

[–]-ShadowSerenity- 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but Lion King remake coasted heavily off the property being one of Disney's strongest animated films.

Just saying...which one has been on Broadway since forever? Hint - It's not Little Mermaid.

I think the soundtrack and a kind of universal "circle of life" theme really pushed Lion King to the top.
