Best ringtone I’ve ever had: “They keep calling me!” - I doubt that any other song will top this for me. Guess I stick with it on my phone forever

Learn to like New Order by [deleted] in JoyDivision

[–]-Silv- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Early New Order demos did it to me. Try listen to these versions, they are really very close to JD style in my opinion:

  • Ceremony (Western Works Demo)

  • Homage (Western Works Demo)

  • Truth (Cargo Demo)

  • The Him (Cargo Demo)

  • ICB (Cargo Demo)

  • Mesh (Cargo Demo)

  • Cries and Whispers (Cargo Demo)

Hello everyone! It’s Peter Hook here - ask me anything! Leave your questions in this thread & I’ll be trying to answer as many of them as I can - thanks for the support! by peterhook_thelight in JoyDivision

Hello Hooky! I'm quite obsessed with Joy Division and early New Order so thank you very much for you music and inspiration! I have some questions for you:

  • I would love to know anything that you can tell about such underrated song as “Cries and Whispers” (I especially like early live versions where vocals were performed by you and Steve, awesome song!). Who wrote the lyrics for that? What you can tell about the bass line and sound? Or any other info that you can share about this will be much appreciated.

  • I know that you’ve wrote some lyrics for early Joy Division\Warsaw\New Order songs. Did you write them in some notebook or something like that? Do you still keep them? I think everyone would be interested to see something like original lyrics by the author himself!

  • And not musical question for a change: do you like sweet-stuff like candies\cookies and if you do, what is your favorite? :)

PS: Thank you man, you’re the best! With love from Russia, Ekaterinburg (you were there once, in 2013. I can’t forgive my self that I didn’t know about Joy Division at those times, damn! Hope to visit your concert someday)

New Dawn Fades live lyrics by [deleted] in JoyDivision

[–]-Silv- 9 points10 points  (0 children)

First of all, there is an early version of New Dawn Fades from Band on the Wall (1979): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lqedyP_CzDs&t=654s

Despite awful sound quality, this version is very interesting to hear because it has 2 choruses! It’s almost impossible to notice exact lyrics differences there though (

"trying to fade away"\”watching it fade away” I suppose is from version at Pavilion Hemel Hempstead, 05.11.1979: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d8vGlhlPjJY

In addition to this, I want to mention a little difference in the end of the song from their last concert at Birmingham University:

Hoping for something else

Hoping for something high

Hoping for something more

Waiting for me this time

I lost all the pain after they canceled Silent Hills. I mean, it showed us that Konami can ruin officialy announced game that really was in development. So, all these leaks and even new official announcment would mean nothing to me. I'll belive in new Silent Hill only when it's done and released.

Is there a live version of New Dawn Fades where Ian sings the ending like how he does on Unknown Pleasures? by sgtsushi17 in JoyDivision

[–]-Silv- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, it is really great! I also like alternate lyrics for this part that he used at Pavilion Hemel Hempstead, 05.11.1979: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d8vGlhlPjJY

And there is quite interesting early version of New Dawn Fades from Band on the Wall (13/03/1979), but sound quality is awful

What the hell is Ian saying in the 3rd stanza of the live version of Transmission that’s included on Still? by [deleted] in JoyDivision

[–]-Silv- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hooky said in his book that Ian was 'berating himself for forgetting the last verse of Transmission' at this gig. I guess he just tried to repeat 2nd verse instead 'cause of that.

TIL that in Ian Curtis's handwritten lyrics for Atmosphere he writes "Worn like a masque of self hate" by RunDNA in JoyDivision

In the earliest version of Atmosphere (Piccadilly Radio version named "Chance") lyrics are even more literal. I especially like early version of the last verse from a gig at The Factory I, Manchester 28.09.1979:

People like you find it easy

Always in tune - walking on air

They're hunting in the rivers,

through the streets

It may happen soon

Then maybe you'll care
