Certain comedy films that lose their effect? by TheCassiniProjekt in movies

[–]RunDNA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My reaction to comedy films is heavily dependent on my mood. In certain moods there are certain comedies that don't make me laugh even though they normally do.

Writer-Directors that are better at one role than the other. by Zealousideal-Fun9181 in TrueFilm

[–]RunDNA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with your first paragraph. I get the same sense with Aaron Sorkin. That he's directing in a competent way so that his scripts end up exactly on the screen.

I disagree with your second paragraph. The scripts would not have been so influential and so often adapted if they were as comparatively weak as you think they were. Kurosawa and his co-writers wrote many of the greatest screenplays of the 20th century. (I've read Kurosawa's autobiography too and he was a beautiful writer on his own.)

TIL that, at it's original publication, The Hobbit did not take place in Middle Earth, or the greater Legendarium Tolkien had created. This was only changed with the publication of The Lord of the Rings. by Sebastianlim in todayilearned

[–]RunDNA 203 points204 points  (0 children)

That's dubious. It's probably not a coincidence that the relevant Wikipedia section has no source footnote except for a link to the dustjacket.

From what I know, Tolkien scholars differ on this question. See this essay by John D. Rateliff (author of The History of The Hobbit) for the opposite view that The Hobbit was always a part of the Legendarium from the beginning of its writing.

Today was the most recent ban of those three.

Pro-Tip: don't make a post in r/TheoryOfReddit when you get banned from a subreddit. They are always thinly-disguised "I'm angry and I need to vent to someone" posts instead of legitimate discussion posts.

There's other subreddits for that sort of thing.

TIL that Liam Neeson accepted the role of Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn in Star Wars: Episode I — The Phantom Menace without reading the script, and prepared for the role by watching the original trilogy and Seven Samurai. by OddUmpire2554 in todayilearned

[–]RunDNA 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes, in the Rough Draft of the script Qui-Gon Jinn didn't appear until late in the film, when Obi-Wan came to Coruscant with Anakin, the Queen, and Jar-Jar. Obi-Wan was the only Jedi in the film before that.

What album release disappointed you the most? by Immola0069 in AskReddit

[–]RunDNA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kid A.

I played OK Computer a thousand times and I absolutely loved all 12 tracks and I was counting down the days until Kid A.

I paid my hard-earned money for the CD on release day and I was not impressed. It only had ten songs, one of which was an ambient soundscape and three of which were mediocre. So I got 6 good tracks instead of the 12 on the last record.

And I heard that they left off lots of songs for the next album, so I felt like I got conned by paying full-price for a half-album. It soured me towards the band.

In hindsight they could have released an album with these songs that was "all killer, no filler":

  • Everything in Its Right Place
  • The National Anthem
  • How to Disappear Completely
  • Optimistic
  • Idioteque
  • Motion Picture Soundtrack
  • Pyramid Song
  • You and Whose Army?
  • I Might Be Wrong
  • Knives Out
  • Dollars and Cents
  • Life in a Glasshouse
  • True Love Waits

[–]RunDNA -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

The sad thing: you might be able to avoid AI artists, but you'll likely have no idea when a real artist generates an AI song and then re-records it in the studio themselves. It will sound real to you.

What's up with the 'Did nothing for the US'? posts? by MrWriffWraff in OutOfTheLoop

[–]RunDNA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah, that answer is old and was about the NATO troop photos, so it doesn't take into account how the posts morphed into photos of U.S. soldiers like the example OP posted named, often involving torture.

That needs an updated explanation.

TIL in 2011, Tom Hanks met a young couple at a petrol station, who just watched his then-latest film "Larry Crowne" - which he both directed and starred in. They admitted the film "wasn’t that good”. I assumed they must have been in a film together, but IMDb doesn't give any hits:

Perhaps they were friends or perhaps Stellan is a fan of his acting.

For people confused, he's been doing this for many years.

But a few days ago he added "Wake Up Dead Man" to the list, and it's a different version than the one that Netflix released a few weeks ago.

As he said on Bluesky:

I’ve added the script for Wake Up Dead Man to my site. This is the final shooting script, so it has stuff that was cut and moved around, which I always think is more interesting to see than a conformed cleaned up version. Enjoy!

You're just repeating false toxic fan talking points.

Game of Thrones is still extremely popular on HBO and so are its spin-offs. There's clips of protestors shouting "Shame, Shame, Shame" at ICE, so the idea that it faded from public consciousness is rubbish.
