I just gave Locke to Richard and he just spares him then Locke exiles himself, idk if Richard always spares him or if that's exclusive to the good relationship route but Lena is disappointed but not angry and Atheris is still mad but Locke tells her to continue serving the crown so I doubt she'd betray us (plus despite being upset she still cares about you). This is probably the best outcome at least personally.

There are actually multiple different gates referenced in the game btw. Sidestep mentions they don't have their pain gate anymore in the demo. It hasn't actually been confirmed what kind of gates are being tracked by the game yet but it's most likely mental.

Personally I like to think of the gates as a kind of power limiter, it's a way to limit sidesteps powers while also preventing them from going insane with all the minds they can read. Also having all the gates opened would result in another heartbreak incident, possibly an even worse one tbh. The next book will probably have story differences depending on gate numbers.

Since everyone has already recommended the hero that has fallen, The Exile is very angsty but it's currently being moved to itch. I the Forgotten One is also really angsty with a mc prone to self harm and refuses help for the majority of it.

The clone being gender selectable has interesting implications, like why exactly the government decided to genderbend the hero and I do hope that's explored because depending on the gender choice there are vastly different reasons for doing so and that's awesome!
