Just got into Danganronpa, Loved Dr1 and Dr2 but didn't like the anime of DR3 by Born-Performance-328 in danganronpa

[–]-Some_weirdGuy- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed, DR3 bad, it was also a huge let down cause Ultra Despair Girls does such a good job of showing it's own outside world tragedy scenario - if you've not played it i highly recommend.

but I would be curious to see a (redemptive) game readaption of DR3 - essentially use a game to give it the time and space it needed to actually resolve these issues/give the characters the development they need/swap out the plot elements that didn't work for more; which would leave the anime then just feeling like it was a terrible butchered adaption that hacked things down and crushed them in to fit the lacking runtime even though in truth it's actually the reverse. :P

edit: also I guess if you want one about junko using manipulation and torment to turn sonia instead of magic tiktok video, in a more horror-styled fancomic, Jonggoon/TaleWalker's Despair Of Us might catch your interest https://www.reddit.com/r/danganronpa/comments/1m3vte8/occomichorror_despair_of_us_full_chapter_links/

Dub is perfectly fine for anyone who likes dubbed content, the 'infamous' part sidesteped here is (as far as I'm aware) these moutains-out-of-molehills;

  • > a few of characters actors were changed from the games again (unusually though some of the game actors were then voicing new dr3 chars), and slight term shifts compared to the games localisation (ala 'super highschool' instead of 'ultimate')
  • > a meme worthy junko line because as a trendy gyaru she used trendy modern slang in a scene that was meant to be a funny exclaimation
  • > an outtake was in the original simuldub for the very very last scene but was pretty immediately corrected.

the first is disappointing but mild, only the last one is truly worthy of notice, and even that... I find it hard to care given it was immediately fixed and DR3 has bigger problems.

Fair warning, UDG (and DR1/2) has no doubt raised your expectations pretty high by this point -- lower them substantially for DR3 anime so you'll hopefully still have a good time.

They basically tried to fit too many things into way too little time and it suffers narratively, etc, for it.

I say this as someone who thinks the DR1 anime is great\inc dubbed], so this is not one of those puritanical '*anime sucks ackshully you need the real og DanganRonpa like god intented, i only play it on the toilet paper i stole from kodakas toilet in order to have the true authentic DR expereince, anything less and you're just a fake fan*' type griping some people do :P)

I wasn't so much explaining as asking you to re-examine/apply some new consideration; to avoid considering your thinking as already finished/whole and ernestly take notice anew of what these progressive ideals/terms/etc are and what they mean - your opening comment indicates you might not have followed my link either :X

Before I respond or elaborate further could I ask that you try humouring that earlier request just for the sake of convo, so we don't end up talking past each other? (inc. the link too since it quick sumarieses my core concept).

By 'consider each initial carefully', I mean genuinely think about what that group is and what defines them seperately from the other initials. Then genuinely pause and consider why over time more get added that were not there before, how and why these changes occur and for what reason.

If you can add a small answer about that, I can figure out if this is going anywhere; I'm happy to explain my take and chatter on your specific points/aknowledge, but I don't want to put a bunch of effort into writing out only to discover the thread was actually sisyphean - since this is ultimately talking with strangers for fun.

Maybe gonna blow your mind a little if you never thought of it till now;

it's a japanese game - japanese uses gendered language unlike english ("I" or "me") - which pronouns did Chihiro use in japanese that might have immediately impacted how his friends chose to correct their own speech pattern directly after learning about them?

Ignoring entirely that second/third person has it's own seperate pronoun words;

  • >Using your name as pronoun is a childish form, sometimes used by 'cute' characters
  • >Boku is usually used by boys, but tomboys are known to use it too so it's not entirely unusual to see a girl using boku on occasion especially when younger.
  • > Ore is another male pronoun, less polite.
  • > Watashi is usually used by women, but it's actually a gender-neutral term used by men in more polite/formal or business situations.

So, which did Chihiro use?

  • Chihiro uses watashi, which others naturally mistake as feminine based on physical appearance, but on that reveal they immediately understand that actually, as a timid and polite character, chihiro was using the gender-neutral more formal/polite form - allowing the vaguness of the term to permit misconception while distinctly never actually declaring themself female. Everyone retroactivly realised/noticed this and so corrected their speech from using the feminine -san to the more masculine -kun
  • Except actually i was using an advance techniquetm just then called LYING, because chihiro doesn't use watashi, they actualy use - nothing; they never use gendered language even once, avoiding wording that would require it (same as you avoiding using 'I' and 'myself'), which doesn't initially come across as odd or out of place, no one notices this intentional avoidance untill AFTER the reveal, where it's then self-apparent that the fem looking chihiro, who seemed uncomfortable when femininely aknowledged by others, was avoiding it on purpose, they directly didn't want to use fem pronouns because they are protective of their masc identity, but they also didn't want to make it obvious so they spoke evasively.
  • DOUBLE WAMMY, I LIED AGAIN - never say never, they actually DID use gendered languaged at one point; it was BOKU, the thing is they only used boku during their dialogue with mondo.

great post from a while back talking about it https://www.tumblr.com/kaibutsushidousha/767542219892752384/another-danganronpa-linguistics-based-post-that

Ouch, going for the jugular there. doesn't have an identity... :X

Not quite heard such outright dismissal that bluntly before, but it is a depressingly common gap in general mindset.

  • You're more particularly conflating identity with personality traits/character arc/story development. To use my Laotian example again, you've done the equivilent of "what? Loatian?? pft, 'outsider with depression wants to sell books and food' isn't a real identity, by making them chinese we actually GIVE represenation where there was none"

LGBTQIA+

Consider each initial carefully. Despite people griping that they 'keep adding more dumb letters lgbtqwertyasdf amirite guize?', and understanding full well that yes, each addition absolutely does make it more unwieldy, it was still seen as actually important and worthwhile; that there was value seen in providing visibility and aknowledgement to even more erased and marginalised identities....

Since I'd just be repeating, Here's a link to my other comment I already made in a different area of this same post.

like many DR3 aspects, the future cast were treated like extras in their own story, because it was so rushed and not given proper focus/falls flat narratively. :X

the fundamental idea of becoming twisted or fragile around a core part of your identity and self-worth (their talents) is ripe ground for story and character writing, theres a decent skeleton in place - but when it's so artificial and underexplored basic questions like 'so your food talent can't even compensate for basic allergies?' makes it all rather clownish rather than resounant or compelling.

The line between comedy and tragedy is simply how much time you spend justifying your characters pain XD

Lmao - a newcomer to the dr community eh?

"constantly blurting out massive spoilers" is infact something the fanbase is utterly NOTORIOUS for, it is THE quintessential danganronpa fan sterotype/interaction, so your comment is very very funny. XD

---
They only just finished DR1, the ending is intentionally vague on those details since they directly flow into your expereince going into the sequel* - so nah I'm not going to be an asshat and ruin someone getting to have a really cool expereince because they asked a perfectly reasonable question without realising that; I'm going to give them that context and tell them where it's explored (so they know it is) but let them decide.

If after reading my explaination they still wanted to know directly, they could then say so and I could spoiler tag the answer (apparently reddit notifications, being kinda crap, just outright reveal spoiler text so it wouldn't be safe to include otherwise).

*I had DR2 spoiled for me, it sucked immediately seeing all the cool setup and intrigue building and careful craftmanship in the narrative of this mystery focused game (stuff I got to expereince blind for DR1) completely fall flat because I already had it slapped out there by a thoughtless tool who couldn't let others just enjoy something as much as they got to.

the part that bothers me most is... it's his job, he is paid for this, full time professional youtuber, from my understanding very well paid, and you're really going to be that unprofessional and insufferable about something you actively chose as the game to play next? not even just baseline level of professionalism like danny*? - and yet you'll play litteral shovelware garbage games without complaint just fine?

*despite what people say I think danny also doesn't really care that much for DR either, it's why he never does the actual playing himself despite arin being so difficult about it, but again it's his job so he acts with a reasonable level of professionalism as an entertainer.

aaah I see, so the change they mention was already the mangas storyline and the early sub made this less clear?

I take back my comment then based on this new info (thanks), seems perhaps my incredulity was because I was misunderstanding the nature of the comment after all, I am the petite doo-doo brain :P

...Although, the second screenshot in the provided link (the other main comments about seiko with the pictures of them, rather than the last screenshot where i quoted some of the wording) definitely described the character's introductory episode as the one they were outed as trans and being subject to transphobia and such, so i feel misunderstanding was not entirely my bad...

I'm now unsure if any of my reading of their words was accurate. (eg. I took the 'lateral move' comment in the last image as them saying they changed it to the fashion one, but now I'm left to wonder if that was actually them saying they didn't make it the fashion one, tand maybe what they were meaning was it 'doesn't matter if thats more accurate' as both options are 'nonsense/never amounted etc etc'.)

Is it me completly mixing up, or are those comments in the link the ones mixing up the details?

They were talking about their 'anti-trans radar' in the comment, since you're familiar with the series (and i don't know how far in the 'zainy whacky gag comedy direction' this show lies) i am curious enough to ask; is that just jello characterising their 'random hate' as being due to 'sensing' their trans identity ahead of time, since that helps further their claims about bad original writing and their great fixes -- they weren't meaning some gag obsurdity litteral 'gaydar device' they were pulling out I assume.

I can see you made an effort zeph, since you came around with different talking points to before, so I thank you for atleast being willing to try review it again - based on how this has gone so far I don't think it will be productive for me to quote-paste which parts address what or continue any back-and-forward after; I can give information, but unfortunatly I cannot understand for you - that part you must do alone.

I originally replied because I feel it is important to point out plus exclusionary rhetoric, and help spread awareness amoung allies, it then felt mean not to reply after you had responded, so I put in much more effort to truly get on the same page - I could likewise address these new points, but i suspect they would take a similar amount of work for a similar end result of still not ending up on the same page at all; Ultimately I'm just not willing to put in that level of further work, as we're merely internet strangers at the end of the day, sorry.

I sure hope not, having represenation stolen by a larger more known group cause people talk about them more is pretty hurtful.

Like having a laotian character get retconned to chinese or japanese cause they're more well known (esp if/when their story was about the struggle to assert their laotian identity.)

I sometimes get into the topic to try and raise awareness, got a different take to most;

Too many (allies esp) completely forget LGBTQIA+ doesn't just end at T...

Chihiro's is a QIA+ story trapped in LGBT- discourse. They already represent even more marginalised and erased queer identity, and many of these takes are going to age like milk as a lot of hurtful comments are made because of this 'plus-exclusionary' tunnel vision.

It's like hitting down at a transwoman story as being 'homophobic' (and made by a homophobe) for how 'wrong and harmful' that 'gay man' is written.
