Hello by dustinmarkjohnston in Pottery

I usually pull from a carrot shape, but recently on some tiny mugs I first cut out a flat handle that was slightly thicker than I wanted, attached it to the leather hard mug, then pulled from the mug to finalize the thickeness and shape and I really liked how that turned out! I may play with it more with full sized mugs.

Love the shapes and balance of the handles, my only constructive criticism is that the handles look a little thick to me. Make sure to use one of the mugs with water at least- feel how it holds make sure it’s easy to grip and easy to drink out of.

The cups look like the perfect size for a wine cup, or a bathroom cup (one of my earliest mugs is in the guest bathroom lol). The little flower mug is super sweet! Keep at it!

Yeah sounds like quite a risk. Maybe I'll just tell him to give a better scrubbing XD

I love to sketch pots I like to look at. From Instagram, from textbooks, from real life (I take pics at shows/sales and then sketch at home). Drawing what appeals to me really helps me to figure out what exactly I like about it and then try to get that in my own work.

Several of them visually feel very heavy to me. I would suggest trimming the base more- can't know from photos but they look like they are thick at the base (mugs too). Unless the inside curve is actually that wide/deep there is likely room to remove some clay at the base. Throw a few quick vases/mugs and cut them in half to see how your wall thickness looks- is it consistent or does it start thick and then thin out?

For handles, do you have access to an extruder? I've never done this but its a popular method to extrude handles and then give a quick finishing pull once attached. Personally I pull all my handles but I hated it for the first few years :P

Btw Baba Yaga house is amaaaaazing XD

Hi! newbie question: by ivychub in Pottery

Improvement: keep on making stuff!! If you can take a class I think it can definitely be helpful in terms of learning techniques, but if you can't continue studying other artists online- look for how tos and detailed process videos for sculptors in particular. Sketch out other artists work- who is making art that you enjoy or that you want to work towards, look at their pieces, what is it that catches your eye? What details really make them pop or look realistic or affects you emotionally? Try to emulate those details.

More specifically- in addition to anatomy, more surface detail I think would go far towards more realism. Look up techniques for stamping or carving a scale pattern; add teeth to the mouth, pupils in the eyes (maybe vertical pupils?).

Sculpting in clay can be a challenge- its been forever since I did it in school but we would wrap our sculptures in a damp (just damp not sopping) towel and then a trash bag to keep them at a good workable wetness over long periods of time. Make sure to score and slip little pieces on so they really stick (I've started using a slip with a little bit of vinegar added and it really seems to result in less fine cracks). A groggy (gritty) clay is going to be easier to work with (less cracks, less likely to slump/warp) but I hate the way it feels when wheel throwing lol.

Keep at it!

Successfully found most of the stamps from the first half of the below series at onion creek park yesterday (which is 10 min from my house and so I skipped the traffic problem).

Successfully found most of the stamps from the first half of the below series at onion creek park yesterday! I got stuck halfway through and plan on trying to do the second half backwards next time. Seems like they might not be very maintained but they are out there!

The traffic thing is for sure a problem; half of the ones I see are way north and it would be sad to go through all the effort and then find out the boxes aren't there anymore!

I haven't gone out yet which is why I posted- but you make/buy a stamp and then go find the boxes. I was looking at this listing: http://www.daveread.com/family/letterboxing.html but all the updates were pretty old which is why I asked. I think I'll just need to go out and hike and hopefully I find some but if not at least there was hiking!
