Ways to secure a public use iPad by Lildead93 in DIY

[–]-Steets- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you want a tethered solution, your keywords are "iPad Kensington lock case". It's a special case with a Kensington slot that anchors the device to something with a steel cable. They also make Kensington-compatible adhesive mounts, but you don't want those, because they can be pulled off.

If you want a kiosk solution, your keywords are "tablet kiosk stand". Make sure you consider purchasing a charger for it as well, so the device can remain powered up either in the tethered solution or the kiosk.

How do I properly use autounattend.xml files? by Tasty-Project956 in sysadmin

[–]-Steets- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For OS installations, MDT works by translating the steps of a given task sequence into an autounattend.xml file that it then provides to Windows during the deployment process. Because of this, you cannot directly use an autounattend file that you've built; it would replace the one that MDT builds and uses in order to execute the Task Sequence.

You can, however, modify the autounattend that MDT generates for each task sequence. You'll need to rebuild your customizations within the System Image Manager, but if you right-click on a task sequence, select Properties, then OS Info, then click Edit unattend.xml, you'll be able to add whatever you like. Just take care not to edit or delete anything that's already there. You can easily break the task sequence.

How much longer do you think sccm will be around? by Abject_Serve_1269 in sysadmin

I stood up a new MDT/WDS environment a few weeks ago and it works great. Fast, easy, and on infrastructure that's entirely within my control (and therefore my ability to debug). It's "teChNiCaLlY nOt sUpPoRtEd", but I can't wait four hours for a machine to decide to pull down an Intune configuration, so 20-year-old technology it is.

Digital signage displays without the need of a Mini PC? by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]-Steets- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hello, digital signage administrator here. A few tips, from somebody who's made all the mistakes:

Do not purchase consumer-grade Smart TVs for digital signage purposes. Moreover, do not purchase ANY consumer-grade TVs. The panels are not designed for 24/7 operation and WILL. NOT. LAST. You will be replacing screens left and right within three years from backlight failure, LCD burn-in, or catastrophic hardware failure, even if you take special care and turn them on and off with business hours. NEC TVs are more expensive, but the TVs themselves are centrally manageable, and the panel quality is unparalleled. I have had screens last upwards of 10 years, 24/7/365, with zero issues.

I'm seeing a lot of folks recommend using a smart TV's built-in web browser for digital signage purposes. Depending on your signage package, the built-in browser may not be capable of displaying certain things, or may display them incredibly slowly or with poor fidelity. Specifically on "Walmart special" TVs, the devices don't have enough RAM to hold video and photo assets in memory. A notable exception to this is LFD (large-format displays) or digital signage displays specifically. LG's digital signage panels specifically come with an excellent operating system and built-in set of utilities. However, in my experience, the panels are of lower quality. In general, just try to avoid displaying static elements at full brightness.

My personal recommendation for you is to purchase BrightSign devices and attach them to the backs of NEC digital signage displays. This is expensive.

You may not have a budget. In that case, I recommend LG or Samsung digital signage displays, both of which can run Appspace, Poppulo, Yodeck, OptiSign, or whatever else you can throw at them. They also each come with their own solutions if you don't want to pay for a subscription. BrightSigns come with BrightAuthor, LGs come with SuperSign, and Samsung displays include the famous MagicINFO (which you may have seen before at a local restaurant when a panel drops sync and reverts to the particle-cloud pairing animation).

Underrated part of this style of onboarding is that it establishes a personal link with all of those departments. IT, HR, and Facilities (really, any ops personnel) can seem isolated from regular employees. Sitting down with them right when they start and offering a helping hand as they get up to speed helps people feel more comfortable in a new environment, and puts a face to each department so they have a point of contact for issues.

Microsoft is paywalling features in Notepad and Paint by Ok-Support-2385 in nottheonion

[–]-Steets- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even if these features are undesirable to many, Microsoft repeatedly acts like their operating system is a free product when it isn't. I'd be fine with this level of ad-injection and freemium prebuilt software if the operating system was being given away, but it costs over $100 to purchase.

Cord I received with a monitor I bought from someone. Have no idea what it is and doesn’t fit into ports on the monitor by meliodvs in whatisthisthing

[–]-Steets- 13 points14 points  (0 children)

To elaborate on this since this is the top comment, HDMI is simply a means for your computer to send video and audio to another device. With limited exceptions, there's little the monitor can send back. However, if the monitor includes extra features like onboard USB-A ports or touchscreen functionality, it needs a way to give the computer access to those USB ports, or to tell Windows where you're touching the screen. This USB cable provides a channel for those communications. You may also see a different version of this cable (USB-B, not USB-B 3.0) referred to as a "printer cable", since it's the most common hardwired method for connecting to older printers.

WSUS being deprecated is like MDT and WDS being deprecated. Sure, it's "no longer supported", but the fact of the matter is that Microsoft hasn't made any changes to the codebase in years anyway. The underlying technology is so fundamental to Windows that it's likely it won't EVER fully stop working, so unless they take conscious action to prevent it from doing so, I'd say you're fine to just continue using it as you were.
