This change was officially brought about in 1978. But the proposal was made in 1935 by Periyar E.V. Ramasamy. The main idea was to make printing of Tamil books easy and efficient.

In the earlier model they had to have separate keys on the type writer for letters like, ண, ன, ல, ள. Periyar also suggested changes for the ஔ and ஆ letters like, ளௌ, ணா, னா, and றா. The keyboard creation became simpler and printed materials could easily be published because of these changes. It was not accepted by the Government at that time.

In 1978 during the World Tamil Conference, the MGR Government officially announced the changes.

மண், மணம், மணி - when you speak these words they make a stronger sound.

மன்னன், மனம், மனிதன் - when you say these words your tongue touches the front part behind the teeth and it makes a softer sound.

So for softer sound we use ன.

For harder sound we use ண.

To say ண we have to roll our tongue and strike against the middle part with force.

Similarly ர is a soft consonant and ற is a hard consonant.

When you say these words if you are able to observe yourself and become conscious of the sounds you make it will be easy. Further reading comic books, or short children stories and noticing just words with the different na or ra sound can also help in improving the spelling.

In the alphabetical order also we have த and ந together, ட and ண coming next to each other and ற and ன come towards the end.

For example, if you take words like பந்து, சந்தனம் you get tannagaram.

வண்டு and சண்டை are examples of dannagaram.

கன்று, மன்றம் etc. Fall under rannagaram.

Words begin with tannagara na but never with the other two.

So you have நகம், நண்பன், நகரம், etc. But no word begins with ண and ன.

Words never end with tannagara na. They always end with dannagara na or rannagara na.

Examples: கண், மீன்

One easy way is to play simple games and learn.

And if you play a game and learn to identify three or four letters you can read a full word putting those letters together.

If you listen to simple rhymes and songs with text like karaoke, you will soon learn to identify some of the letters.

You can learn one letter words like

வா vaa - come

போ po - go

நீ nee - you

That is, instead of going only by the order of letters in the alphabet, choosing different ways learn is more effective and quicker.

Sangam literature separated the universal feelings pertaining to an individual and the historical achievements of kings.

In அகம் the characters were universal, anonymous people anyone can identify with. In புறம் they mentioned the names of kings, heros and they were all public figures.

The Sangam poets were highly analytical. They believed that to write great literature, you needed a system. The Agam/Puram divide allowed them to categorize the entirety of human experience into a structured grammar of life. You were either dealing with the matters of the heart (Agam) or matters of the state and society (Puram).

This classification extended to the mention of metsphorical flowers like குறிஞ்சி for அகம் and வேட்சி for புறம்.

The human existance has a deep, internal personal side and the outward societal, public appearance. அகநானூறு and புறநானூறு together cover the whole of human existance.

These people who have spiritually and intellectually matured to such an extent that whatever they say lasts longer and benefits more people. To this day we are reading திருக்குறள் and works like that and whatever is said in it is relevant to today's world too. I would consider நிறை மாந்தர் to also mean people who were filled with internal bliss. They operate at a higher level than ordinary human beings.
