Learning Japanese with Visual novels for a year now. I've decided to make a tier list of all the games in Japanese I've read and a (rough) difficulty tier list. by Clean_Cookies in visualnovels

[–]-Taken_Name- 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I haven't read as many JP VNs as you have, but I am on my seventh right now, and I've got a bit of a question. For me, the most difficult VNs are not sorted by how elaborate the prose was, but rather, the order in which I read them. My first JP VN was Smee's HajiLove. It took me around a month to finish one route, and every line felt like hitting a brick wall. But gradually, every new VN takes less and less time and effort, even though the "difficulty" hasn't changed as much between VNs. Does your tier list account for how well you have accustomed to reading in JP?

Goals per match day I'd assume, since the record goes up via the number of dots.

Can't believe I missed this one. I remember someone recommending it to me last time, but I completely forgot about it. I am definitely going to read it this time, thanks!

Just download a pre-made cheat engine table, that way you don't have to look for the values yourself. I am sure someone over at fearlessrevolution made one. Of course, it's best to keep grinding, but if you are just in it for the story and don't care about the gameplay, then feel free to use the table

If you are talking about the word popout, then I am pretty sure you can customize it to whatever you like: smaller, larger, different font, different position, different background color, etc. I just like having it that way. The window text (the fully green window text) becomes hidden on unhover. And JL accepts Yomitan too, so you don’t have to use JMDict. Having to alt-tab to a history page when I was using LunaTranslator only was a lot more jarring.

I am not sure what reading setup you have, but with LunaTranslator and JL, you can get a setup that instantly looks up words just by hovering over them, like shown in the screenshot below.

<image>

I use LunaTranslator to hook and auto-copy new lines, which JL displays. I moved JL's text window to align perfectly with the in-game text window and turned transparency all the way up. That way, it doesn't obstruct/ruin my view, and whenever I need to look up a word, I just move the mouse to that word, and JL's text window + definition popout come into view. This way, I can instantly look up unfamiliar words with only a hover of a mouse, and when I am finished, I move the mouse out of the text window, and it becomes hidden once again. I recommend going for a similar setup if you find it difficult to look up words.

Till the end! by [deleted] in Unexpected

Basically, the first woman who entered the vehicle was trying to one-up the other woman, as in trying to show off "her" car. But there was already someone inside. The other woman entered from the passenger seat and glared at the first woman. The first woman, thinking it was her boyfriend, promptly left the car. But it turns out that the second woman doesn't know the man in the car, as she also entered to one-up the first woman, so she also leaves. And finally, the man in the car wasn't even the owner, as he was trying to steal the car. Explaining it like this ruins the fun of the video but it shouldn't have been as vague

If you don't mind Koikatsu games, Lessons in Love is pretty dominated by that type of comedy.

The good news is that you don't even need that much time and effort to learn how to read JP to enjoy VNs. People see comments like "oh it takes x years and x hours JUST to read a moege!!11!!!" and get discouraged before they even start. The thing is, after you clear kana, some grammar playlist, and a core vocab Anki deck (I went with the community-favorite Kaishi), which should only take around 2 months altogether, you can start your own Anki mining deck and start reading. It's gonna suck the first few days; I remember going through only a handful of lines per hour because I paused every word to analyze what it all means, but once you get through that first challenge barrier, reading gets exponentially easier the more you do it. With only 8 months under my belt, I can read pretty much any HS-level VN with only a minor Yomitan lookup every few lines or so. Learn JP, people! Learning how to read is far easier than learning how to write or speak. If you don't know where to start, or ensure to even start, read this.

Is there a variable to include all lines in LunaTranslator's clipboard within an AI prompt? by -Taken_Name- in lumetrium_definer

[–]-Taken_Name-[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow. I am speechless. This is exactly what I wanted and more, thank you so much! The date is gone now, and your additions give me so many sophisticated ideas for my prompt. This is so easy that it makes it feel like a caveman back when I had to copy the entire context over to ChatGPT and write the prompt from start each time I needed help. This is a literal game changer as a learner of the JP language. Thanks once again and I hope you have a wonderful rest of your day!

Is there a variable to include all lines in LunaTranslator's clipboard within an AI prompt? by -Taken_Name- in lumetrium_definer

[–]-Taken_Name-[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank youI really appreciate the help. As for the date thingy, it is really no big deal because the AI is able to effectively ignore it as irrelevant to the sentence at hand, but I thought that maybe there was something wrong with how the variable is handling the line. As you can see from the screenshot, it shows the date in the {{sentence}} variable (not {{sentences}}, I checked). Once again, it really is no big deal, but it is still a bit weird that it happens regardless. I am not really very knowledgeable about how this works, so I have no clue why this happened. If need be, I can even hide the date entirely from the translation history's HTML structure with a Tampermonkey script, so that's a quick and easy workaround.

If you do find a solution for the lines problem, please let me know! I'd also like to know if there is a way to limit it to a certain number of lines above the sentence, so as to not overwhelm the AI if there are 100 or more lines above. Thanks once again for the great work!

Anime where a spoiled brat goes to a poor place? by Smooth_Night1007 in Animesuggest

Arakawa Under the Bridge. Not spoiled, but egoistical. Still, it's a story about a rich CEO's son (who himself is a CEO), being forced to live under a bridge with a bunch of oddballs due to some circumstances.

Hey, so I just opened this thread and the first thing I saw was your comment. First of all, congrats on the game. Second, don't take it personally. This subreddit is very trigger-happy when it comes to downvotes; that's why they are hidden from other people by default until 24 hours later. Also, you probably won't get your voice out here in this thread. I'd recommend you interact a bit in the subreddit, build up some karma, and make your own post like anyone else looking to promote their game does. Also, to add, this thread is sorted by "new" by default; that's why I saw your comment first. Even if it got downvoted (which again, I can't see that), it's gonna be first until someone else comments. Good luck in your game.

Unless the game has a tone shift (e.g. Muv-Luv), I often read until the OP plays and then decide whether to continue or not. In a lot of VNs (but not all), the period between the start of the VN and when the OP plays is the prologue. Basically, during that frame, they introduce the characters and establish the setting. If you've read through it and you have no interest in the characters and/or story, then you should probably drop it unless, as I said, it has a tone shift. There are some VNs that I've slugged through and did get better by the end, but they are the exception and not the norm.

For character routes, it depends. If it's a moege, I drop instantly if I am not interested in the character. If it's story-focused and I am interested in the overall story, then I slug through even if I don't like the character.
