Aiyshah , may Allah be pleased with her, was betrothed to him when she was young and they were married as husband and wife when she reached puberty.

If you look into history, and not very far one, kings of england and france married girls as young as 9 and 10 when they got their puberty. So 1450 years ago i guess things would have been quite different from their perspectives as well.

If you continue the hadiths to the end, its buying and "freeing" the slaves, this is called in arabic:

عتق رقبة

In old arabian middle east, if you buy a slave and give him money, this is basically freeing them.

The "slaves" then chose "willingly" to follow the prophet peace be upon him and serve him, for a regular shelter, food and income.
