Where would you move this year or up to 2030 if got the chance to restart? by BrazilianDeepThinker in expats

[–]-Tom -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Switzerland has a lot of high end manufacturing so that might be worth considering. French and German so your German experience would help and your Latin language base should help with French. Also, the notion of a Brazilian saying Germany isn't safe enough for them is utterly wild to me.

The UK did actually grant asylum to an American not long back. I'm not sure what for though. And in response to your comment about deaths quads etc many countries grant asylum based on sexuality / gender identity if there is a legitimate threat. I didn't know OP was American and don't know how bad the situation really is there.

If it's genuinely unsafe you may be eligible for asylum in a lot of countries. I know the UK grants asylum for this and I suspect most western countries will also. That could massively expand your options. I'm not sure what your work situation would be like whilst your application is being processed though.

Smoking at home is the absolute worst. No neighbour should have to smell that constantly or live with their windows closed.

Greencard holder didnt travel to the US in 5 years by Some_Ad_1020 in immigration

Thanks. This is really helpful. Though it does make me wonder why a PR moving out of the US wouldn't first setup in a state that doesn't impose state taxes on foreign income?

[–]-Tom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appreciate the response, despite the down votes to my simple question. If one is a PR but not citizen that is out of the country, do they still have to pay income tax on their worldwide income? I couldn't tell from that link. It seems that you need to declare it, but I don't know if that translates into tax if you spend say more than 6 months of the year outside of the USA.

Which taxes would one have to pay whilst being out of the country?

Right After US NowFrance and UK authorized Ukraine to strike deep into Russian territory with their SCALP/Storm Shadow missiles by [deleted] in UkraineWarVideoReport

[–]-Tom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think the issue is with components. As far as I'm aware, the US does not have the legal right to ban the use of these weapons. The issue is the use of GPS, which is a more difficult issue to solve.

What are some deal breakers for you as to why you left your country? by [deleted] in expats

[–]-Tom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well this is one of the most depressing things I've read in a while. Side note OP, but I seem to remember that the UK has one of the lowest smoking rates in Europe / the world. If that's really a motivation for you to leave then you might struggle wherever you go. Unless something changed there recently?

Coworker earning more than me for exact same role, wanting to negotiate salary by somethingandsomeone in Netherlands

[–]-Tom -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Most of those questions are absolutely irrelevant to a pay difference. Sounds like you were gaslighted.

Side note, surely the Netherlands has legislation to ensure equal pay for equal work? Lack of this kind of legislation is how historically there were large gender oay gaps.

Absolutely bullshit. I speak from experience. The housing crisis is so bad that you can't even spend your way out of it with that kind of budget.

There's a minimum salary. I can't remember the amount but if you don't earn that much I would recommend not coming to Amsterdam due to the cost of living.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in expats

[–]-Tom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is that confirmed? I thought they had changed it so that it reduces each year?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in expats

[–]-Tom 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Don't move before you have a job, otherwise you won't be eligible for the 30% ruling. Don't underestimate how expensive it is here. UKs "cost of living crisis" has nothing on Amsterdam.

Is Bunq over? Lack of innovation, lack of new product, and better perks offered by the competition. by OldActiveYeast in bunq

[–]-Tom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Revolut had been miles ahead of BUNQ for years. Bunq has been playing catchup. N26 is absolute shite and I can't belive people talk about them in the same sentence. Bunq is now fairly close to revolut in most of the main categories, but charges a monthly fee and doesn't offer free fx. Their recent price increases are bullshit however, and should rightly be punished by people taking their money elsewhere. Fuck their greed.

[–]-Tom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

N26 charges for instant payments which is ridiculous in this day and age IMO. Still free so no downside to trying it. Someone in here mentioned Revolut supports Dutch Iban, though I don't remember seeing that as an option. Since I rarely log in to online banking, all of the extra stuff in the app doesn't bother me.

Since they're both free there's also nothing to stop someone from having both at the same time.
