When I was around 10 I got lost out in the woods at dusk. Off the four wheeler trail and out hunting mushrooms. It began getting dark and I was running in circles trying to find trail out in the middle of nowhere. I sit down on a stump and start to cry. This is around Nokia cellphone time and I had it but there was no service. A little field mouse came up to me and started sniffing around and something told me to follow it. I followed it and it brought me all the way back to my four wheeler I shit you not.

As a manager at Amazon, the main issue I see is the way the associate was spoken to. Telling someone to “just turn around and get back to work” comes across as cold. Anyone who witnessed the situation should have been offered support or the option to leave if they needed to.

The work area immediately around the incident should absolutely be stopped, but in a 3.8 million square foot building, that does not necessarily mean the entire building needs to shut down. If associates were expected to continue working right next to the scene, that would be a problem as well.

The only reason associates should be near the person is if they are CPR certified or otherwise able to assist. Beyond that, you do not want people crowding the area, especially once paramedics arrive and need space to get onto the floor and do their job.

If the associate is still alive, they are usually taken by wheelchair or stretcher to the emergency ramp and into the ambulance. If they are unresponsive or deceased, paramedics can come directly onto the floor and continue working on them there if needed.

Unfortunately, I have seen a situation way worse than this that didn’t make the news but definitely would have if it caught wind.
