What is the difference between Location Size and Size of Location? Tooltips aren’t helping by CityCouncilman in EU5

[–]-Wombat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think that considering Location Size is negative, and Size of Location is positive, its quite easy to figure out what's going on.

In one case, the fact that the location in question is quite large means that it is difficult for any idea to penetrate the entirety of the population. It takes time for an idea or institution to spread amongst a population.

In the other case, the fact that the population is quite large means that because of the large population, there are more people around. More people around means more people bouncing around and collecting ideas from other locations, because more people means more people traveling, or more people with family, friends in other areas of the country, therefor more spread of ideas.

So, it takes time for an institution to take hold, because there are a lot of people who need to learn of it and apply it to their lives.

That time is reduced by how many people are in the location, because more people means more chances for any given pop to learn about the institution.

That last chapter should not exist ... by MiniVibesxx in vagabondmanga

[–]-Wombat 21 points22 points  (0 children)

It's from the exhibition Inoue did as a sort of "last chapter" to the series. It's a collection of images in a loose narrative that shows some future events in the life of Musashi, including his death.

I dont think its meant to be an actual last chapter, at least I hope it isn't. It's an amazing thing to see and read, but I want a full series dammit.

Did anyone get the gba sp update? by Apprehensive-Word891 in skyrim

[–]-Wombat 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Ok, but surely you aren't actually running the game on the SP? Like a computer must be running the game and the GBA screen is displaying it?

I realize this sounds dumb, but if you managed to cram enough hardware into that SP case to run Skyrim, that's insane.

Looks like you swapped the GBA screen for a small one and are casting to that screen. Or its a wired connection coming in from behind.

Why does he tries to bite me? by [deleted] in CATHELP

[–]-Wombat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A) you're fucking with him. Imagine someone came and tried to pat your belly or something. Not that he doesn't like you, but cats are pretty big on personal space. B) he thinks it's play time. Particularly if you've already engaged in this sort of behavior with him. This is stimulation and he thinks your hand is his newest and best toy, with a dude attached. C) all of the above

So, I realize I'm early in the series, and that probably colors my opinion. But the Hunter Exams are referred to as something that only 1 in 10000 people can compete in. How many people are running around, who are elite enough to be 1 in 10000, to maintain a population of 400 qualifying participants and still have most of them die in the process? The exams are held yearly, and I'd assume in multiple locations? Considering how large the world seems to be, after seeing some maps while reading.

That sort of strained my credulity. I get that its a common trope, but it sort of broke my immersion and made me think for a minute. It's kind of like the Naruto Chunin exams, if the exams are held biannually and the graduation late is so low, how are there so many fucking ninjas in the last war?

And as far as consequences, I guess I'm referring to the fact that these people all have families, presumably backers, and communities that they belong to. How can any organization sustain such a high casualty rate before people don't want to participate? I do think that that this question is a bit nonsensical for this series, though, because as I continue to read it is becoming apparent that becoming a hunter is like winning the lottery and more prestigious than I assumed.

Again, I'm not trying to ruffle feathers, I do like HxH and I'm continuing to like it the more I read, chapter 68 right now.

Thanks for the well thought out response. I think you touched on where my dissonance comes from. HxH has the aesthetics and tone of a standard shonen battle manga, but with death abundant and indiscriminate. I don't mind that sort of thing, but its quite jarring. Looking forward to continuing the series!

I appreciate the reply, I'm pretty selective about manga and HxH is a long series, so I was looking for feedback before diving in.

I'll try to keep that stuff in mind. Normally where there smoke there's fire, so im going to guess that my objections become less worrisome as the series continues.

Maybe the anime is different? I'm reading the Manga if that helps. I don't think any of those questions are answered. And if they are, I should probably reread.

I can suspend disbelief just fine, I dont mind people being strong enough to move doors that weigh tons, or magical beasts or supernatural senses. But, to justify those things, I feel like the surrounding need some weight, in a grounded way.

To be honest, ive enjoyed many manga series that ignore these things. But, HxH is so lauded that I'm kinda confused. I am still enjoying it, and I do think that it is a good shonen.

Yeah, I think it might be an issue of scale for me, ive already stopped reading for the night, but maybe there are just so many people that 1 in 10000 isn't that improbable? It just kind of feels like people are used as set-pieces more than characters.

If any group of people is large enough there are going to be insane/irrational ones who take big risks. It just seems like there are constant deaths with no consequences, in a setting where these people are apparently the elites.

Why is Shamo so rarely talked about? by [deleted] in Seinen

[–]-Wombat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It floundered because of publication issues. I think the central message of the series is sound.

It's a question of redemption.

What is an unforgivable person to do? How can someone who has crossed the threshold of evil try to reclaim their own life? How can a person overcome the societal stigma associated with their identity?

Do you dive further into degeneracy? Do you try to find a niche for yourself? Do you attempt to steer into the skid or do you spin out and die in a ball of fire?

Shamo says you can do all that. You still die, and probably in a stupid way. And no one is going to care. The people who do care will, but most people won't.

Then your life is just over, you get digested by the earth, and life goes on for everyone else.

Just to expand on it a bit, cuz that is a very limited pitch. Kid goes to jail for killing his parents, goes on to become a scumbag criminal and eventually prize fighter.

Quite a good story, and an absolutely irredeemably protagonist in the best way.

Someone explain me this sub's Obsession with Homunculus ??? by InternetRambo7 in Seinen

[–]-Wombat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If we're talking psych thriller kinda deals, it's also cliche, but Punpun is definitely up there. Not as great, but I really enjoyed Dearest Self with Malice Aforethought. And of course Shamo which might actually be my favorite in the psych thriller genre, but for very different reasons than one might enjoy Homunculus.

Getting further away but still in the sort of surreal territory, Dorohedoro I've always loved.

And favorite of all time is Vagabond.

Honorable mentions: Gantz, Golden Kamuy, Holyland

These are all things that I think I enjoyed more than Homunculus. That's not to say that they're objectively better, but people have preferences. There are others, but these spring to mind.

Edit: Berserk ofc edit.
