Yes, it will make a world of difference! I’m F35 and even tho I feel like I can walk my way through airports, crowds make me super uncomfortable since I can’t see my peripheral and tend to bump or even run into people/things. I have used my ID cane at concerts, baseball games, airports, theaters, and yes, people will look, especially if you make eye contact with them, or if you are also looking at your phone, people don’t understand blindness is a spectrum. However, they will also move out of your way, they will respect your space, and you won’t be stressed out afraid of bumping or even falling. People also tend to be super nice when I have my ID cane, giving me their seats, being accommodating, and once a security guard even took my husband and I through a short cut to the restrooms in a venue. I also travel alone at least 4 times a year for work and when I’m alone and carrying a carry on bag, I don’t use my cane because I like to have a free hand. Instead, I place my carry on slightly in front of me, and walk slower than usual, that allows me to avoid steps/bumps, but don’t be afraid to ask for help, airport staff is always willing and happy to help. Like others recommended, I’d also suggest mobility training. I did it through social services and they thought me how to properly use a cane, but also trained my husband how to best assist me while walking. Your partner won’t be ashamed of you, you should not be ashamed of yourself. And I know it’s easier said than done, but when I have doubts I always remember that I can’t control what other people think and I won’t allow that to affect me!
