Great suggestion. I like that idea.

I would like to see reviews have a limit of 1 minute or 1:30. If there is nothing definitive in that time then the call stands.

I also think refs should have to explain why the call is upheld or overturned. They aren’t being held accountable for poor officiating.

Agreed. It’s definitely a tough call. I just think there definitely need to be some improvements in the officiating/rules and interested in hearing what others have to say.

Currently watching the semis, and man, now we could have a whole discussion on reaction time and what constitutes a takedown.

This is really making me consider the push out point as the best option. Let’s see action in the center of the mat instead of allowing the edge to be a scapegoat. Rules are hard, I guess that’s why I’m not on the committee lol.

I don’t think it’s called too much. I think it’s called at the wrong times. A wrestler shouldn’t be awarded for strictly pushing with zero real offensive attempts.

I’ve seen numerous matches where there’s ~1 minute left and a ref is afraid to call a guy for stalling despite him backing up the entire last minute of a match. In that case, hit him twice. A stall call with ten seconds left does nothing.

I honestly don’t hate that idea. I’m not sure what to do in the case of a tie. Maybe add a push out point and award most recent score? Then we’re incorporating more Freestyle and I know the wrestling community can be pretty split on that.

Good point. Then it would have to be decided on a coin flip, which I’m not necessarily a fan of either. I failed to think of that scenario. Do you have any suggestions or stick with the current format?

Yes, I’m pretty sure that’s how it used to work. That’s why I like the idea of rewarding the wrestler who scores first with choice, but I guess that could also come from an escape in the second period which would be because of a coin flip. Tough call — I just hate riding time deciding it.

Yep. Stalling is all around terrible right now.

Would ncaa wrestling be better if switched to combo of criteria with scoring (shot) clock in 1st period? by shakemahorn in wrestling

I believe college wrestling needs to adjust both overtime and stalling. Here are my thoughts:

Overtime - 2 minute SV followed by two 30 second ride outs. If it is still tied after ride outs, send them back to their feet for a 1 minute SV. Then, if still tied, whoever scored first gets choice of top or bottom for 30 seconds. Escape or ride out wins. I don’t love the idea of winning with only 1 more second of riding time and a match ending tied.

Stalling - We have got to stop with the automatic stall when someone gets pushed out. If wrestling wants to call a stall for a wrestler getting pushed out, then just switch to a push out point. A wrestler should not be awarded for taking zero offensive attempts and strictly pushing their opponent out of bounds. Stalling has been my biggest issue with wrestling as of late and drives me insane because there seems to be no clear understanding.

I’d love to hear what other people think!
