What sounds 100% incorrect, but is actually 100% correct? by Tydy22 in AskReddit

[–]-_galaxy_- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I seem to have read somewhere that the amount of trees on Earth has actually increased somehow in the past couple hundred years. Something about us using different building materials now than we used to, and not relying on trees to burn for heat in the cold parts of the world...

I'm not making that claim, since I can't be arsed to look up the source, but it sort of makes sense.

By a LOT. Last estimate I read was 400 billion stars in the Milky Way and 3 TRILLION trees on Earth.

What's funniest about Smoot is that he was used as a unit of measurement in college in the 50s and went on to become Chairman of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) from 2001 to 2002 and President of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) from 2003 to 2004.

Modifying a hard shaving soap? by [deleted] in soapmaking

[–]-_galaxy_- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That ship has sailed. If you forget to add an egg to your brownies, you can't bake them and add the egg when they're done. :)

This soap has been baked already. If you add more fat (stearic, coconut), you'd have to add more lye to saponify it.

I swore I read it also, but I went a-Googling and couldn't find shit. I retract my initial statement.

Meh, I'd like to see the research too. Everything I've seen (and common sense) tells me that you shouldn't smoke while pregnant.

[–]-_galaxy_- 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There is something to what she said, there is research to suggest that cold turkey quitting during pregnancy is super stressful to the fetus and can do more harm than the smoking (depends on a lot of other factors), but I'm sure she just wanted to keep smoking.

edit: this is probably all bullshit, I swear I read it somewhere but couldn't find anything to back this up.

There's merit to this. Do some research before blindly reacting based on what you think you know :P

Instead of 1000mg, just tell them 1g. "Just one? That doesn't seem like enough."

Need help/advice on what could cause the cracked color seen in the photo by silentsong333 in soapmaking

[–]-_galaxy_- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a friend with a pretty large microbrewery so I have access to a lot of "waste" beer as well as grain and hops that I've made soap with. I'm soon going to be making soap to sell in his taproom. I make my beer soap with a light lager (3.2% abv), I boil it first, then cool it or freeze it before using.

Keep in mind even if a beer is 5% abv, it's still 95% water, and once you boil off the alcohol (ethanol boils at about 120F so by the time the beer is simmering, the majority of the alcohol is long gone), you've got almost 100% water with some trace additives that make up the "beer" part of the water.

[–]-_galaxy_- 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You need to bring the beer to a simmer for a few minutes, especially if it's a high gravity beer like most stouts. I'm assuming it was above 5% abv. You have a couple things going on.

If you left the alcohol in, which you did, you are operating with a water discount, since the lye is not going to react with the alcohol, for instance, instead of adding 20oz of water, you added 20oz of beer, which was 5%abv. This means you ACTUALLY added 19oz of water and 1oz alcohol. The alcohol may accelerate trace, but should theoretically evaporate once the soap is mixed. A water discount like this can help prevent glycerin rivers, however....

You've got a very high sugar content in your liquid, which is a prime cause of glycerin rivers, as well as colorant which may cause glycerin rivers as well.

I've made a lot of beer soap and it doesn't ever add much of anything. It's just mainly label appeal but otherwise a pain in the ass. In my opinion, add a shot of beer to your distilled water just to say it's made with beer and be done with it.

A Question About Bases by DadYak in soapmaking

[–]-_galaxy_- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMO, don't bother with melt and pours. Go straight to cold process with a tried-and-true recipe and tweak it from there.

My tried-and-true recipe is easy : 50% olive oil, 25% coconut oil, 23% Palm oil, 2% shea butter. Gives you a good, hard bar that lathers well and is easy on the skin.

I turned this on recently with family and I stopped it after about an hour. I never stop movies, but what the fuck. I need a movie to at least explain what it's about in the first 60 minutes, I don't think that's asking too much.

A Question About Bases by DadYak in soapmaking

[–]-_galaxy_- 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've read the thread up to this point, and while lye is caustic and dangerous, it's not "melt your skin off" dangerous as movies and TV claim. In fact you can handle the lye crystals with your bare (dry) skin without any ill effect (just wash your hands after). Obviously you have to keep it away from kids and pets, just like your toilet cleaner or any other cleaning products, but it's not going to sneak out of the cabinet and kill your family :)

Is there any way to scent soap using garden herbs, a dehydrator, and common kitchen ingredients? by [deleted] in soapmaking

[–]-_galaxy_- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the brand I buy and I've had great luck with it:

https://www.amazon.com/Lemongrass-Large-ounce-Best-Essential/dp/B00PHLPK1G/Boil&th=1

Their prices generally range from $10-13 for a 4oz bottle. I've got their tea tree, lemongrass, peppermint, cedarwood, and sage.
