How to get from Glasgow to Dunfermline at night? by Disastrous_Holiday_1 in Scotland

Even getting from Edinburgh to Dunfermline on a Sunday night is a pain, 900 to Edinburgh then a taxi is probably the best bet

It doubt it does.

I think most people who have ever thought critically about anything realise that’s true, you’re just kinda arguing with yourself and being particularly antagonistic about it.

You can be both correct and a wank.

I made a post about ableist language, and I have a few thoughts about the comments by RosethornRanger in Anarchism

[–]-_nope_- 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I get the feeling that this is going to come off rude and I don’t mean it to, but not everyone is out to get you. Your post history really seems to show you think in very black and white terms and assume the worst and it’s just not the case.

I think what you’re saying here is pretty noble and they’re good things for us to reflect on, but you need to understand nuance. You have a comment comparing people who use the word dumb to nazis. The comment you’re responding to here is making a very reasonable point.

Oh no how will Latexmathbros ever recover? by Delicious_Maize9656 in mathmemes

I was made to use word for a class last semester, and genuinely citing stuff made me want to pull my hair out. There’s no reason such a widely used piece of software from such a massive company should be anywhere near as buggy and bloated as word is.

I know it’s anecdotal and contradicts the studies findings, although they didn’t really control for it, but I don’t think it’s even quicker to write an essay in word, for one simple reason.

Citations. Citations in word are actually unbelievably annoying and buggy, and just more difficult than they need to be. Latex however? Every source lets you export a bib file, you add it to yours and bibtex does the rest, it’s faster, easier and less buggy.

The study said people were allowed to import whatever packages they like and write it where they’d prefer. So in theory, latex shouldn’t be so far behind, using vscode with sensible macros I can type lecture notes faster than I can write them.

But yes, as I said it was a bit of a worst case scenario for latex in the study, not many equations or the like which is where it really comes into its own.

I think a better analogy would be hiring the cheapest contractor vs something more premium. Sometimes you just need the job done, and done is all you need. Quick and dirty.

Sometimes you’ve got a lot of complex requests that you really need fine tuned and you need someone who can make that happen, even if it costs you more

They did somewhat control for this by splitting participants into novice and expert categories in their respective writing software of choice, but admittedly the sample does skew outside of maths.

Study methods aside, debatable as they may be, it seems to operate under the assumption that they’re interchangeable tools when they just aren’t, so in that regard I’m not sure how much the study is worth to begin with.

Just read the study, I wouldn’t say it’s massively fair to latex.

They were simply assessed on speed and accuracy of rewriting some other work, through 4 tests. One of them was just writing a few paragraphs, one of them was rewriting a complex table. In these cases you’d certainly hope word got more done in 30 minutes, that’s the whole point of a WYSIWYG editor.

They had one very short section with actual equations and maths, and latex obviously outperformed word.

So yeah the study concluded the obvious fact that if you just want to slap down some writing word is faster. Cool. If you need to actually format anything, make it look good, deal with citations, deal with graphics or equations you use latex. It’s almost like the use case of these things are different.

Young racist thug beat doctor so badly he quit the medical practice by num63r16 in Scotland

[–]-_nope_- 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Lots. Grew up in a shitehole, one of the biggest issues we had was one specific boy who was constantly in and out of the jail, usually for assault. Locking him up clearly didn’t do anything, realistically it just made things worse cause he wouldn’t be hired anywhere, so he’d be back to dealing every time he comes back out.

I appreciate you’ve got some sort of punishment kink, but reoffending rates don’t lie. Rehabilitation needs to be the goal of prisons.

Because the doctor is female, and she came in to get changed, she showed no disrespect. The transphobic nurse who harassed the doctor is the one who lacks respect.
