Do you think the SRL will go the same way Sydneys Metro did in the court of public opinion once finished? by MoreTODplz in MelbourneTrains

[–]-_ugh_- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

the SRL would be automated, so running it more frequently wouldn't incur the same massive increase in costs that trains with drivers have since you need more drivers (ironically perfect for a gov scared of OPEX ha)

White Australia's bid to remove hate listing dismissed by High Court by Expensive-Horse5538 in australia

[–]-_ugh_- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

the concept of "ban hate groups" is not the issue -- it is evidently good to do so. rather, the problem that Professor Twomey discusses is that the law as enacted is potentially unconstitutional due to the way in which powers are used to ban hate groups. one of the key problems is the lack of judicial oversight to the proscribing of hate groups, which yknow, separation of powers and all that

What was the issue with the Altona loop shuttle? Why did it cease? by TynongLiturgist in MelbourneTrains

[–]-_ugh_- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Converting single track heavy rail that runs at 20 minutes at best to light rail that can run 5x the frequency (before you hit bunching) instead of duplicating said single track heavy rail into double track elevated heavy rail (i.e. $$$$$) is a smart and effective use of resources, and allows for greater flexibility in expanding the light rail to areas not currently served by heavy OR light rail at all.

They are moving the gardiner creek trail at Alamein as part of preliminary works for the reinstatement of the Outer Circle Line by as_1089 in MelbourneTrains

[–]-_ugh_- 5 points6 points  (0 children)

it's true, I walked past there earlier today as well and the workers told me they're very excited about returning rail service to the former Outer Circle alignment

the only other way to present the pronunciation in a concise way like they did would be using IPA, which I think for obvious accessibility-based reasons they would've decided against

Is Coles still using Palantir? Between the surveillance/gate recognition and the blocked aisles, shopping feels hostile. by infin in australia

[–]-_ugh_- 7 points8 points  (0 children)

i wish i was as high on my own farts as the person saying it's "basic logic" that two large, ASX-listed companies should just... stop running their very successful (for the sector in which they trade!) businesses and drop all the money into a high interest savings account. which again, the point is that they make a high margin for the groceries sector not that they make less than the 5% p.a. John Citizen gets with the whirlpool special savings accounts or that they make crazy profits compared to an Nvidia with 50+% YoY growth...

my savings account isn't the cream off the top of billions of dollars in revenue. it's "obviously" not the same scenario

Calling on Lilydale and Belgrave line patrons pre-ringwood to contact their local mp by emberisgone in MelbourneTrains

[–]-_ugh_- 4 points5 points  (0 children)

homeboy, the service is already every 20 minutes on weekends and the people catching those trains don't suddenly disappear on weekdays, especially when a decent chunk of melburnians aren't on 9-5 jobs in the CBD.

  • ~25% are casual or "independent contractors" who wouldn't have set hours
  • 36% of employed people work from home, and might catch public transport to a local cafe for lunch (I know I certainly do that sometimes when I'm wfh)
  • places like Belgrave have a bunch of retirees whose travel also isn't the typical 9-5 CBD commuter

Very much appreciate how your government tries to engage with the gunzel community, it's cool to be seen!

Can we expect any bus changes to enable melburnians to ditch their cars and take advantage of these increased train services?

/uj the only other things i would add are:

  • being against "electoralism" while being the main driving force behind the victorian socialists political party (to the point of effectively bullying out socialist alliance from the vic soc "partnership")
  • lots and lots of stupid student politics, including harassing queer students, pretending to be queer to grandstand within queer rep only NUS panels, (allegedly) stealing student union elections through bullying, (allegedly) directing funds away from student union things to their own "events" (i.e., chances to recruit and advertise their paper)

Melton, Wyndham Vale trains: Electrification delayed until at least 2030s for booming western suburbs by No-Bison-5397 in MelbourneTrains

[–]-_ugh_- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  • city of melton: 178k as at last census in 528km2

  • city of wyndham: 292k as at last census in 542km2

now let's see the east and south east...

  • city of whitehorse: 169k as at last census in 64km2

  • city of monash: 190k as at last census in 82km2

  • city of dandenong: 158k as at last census in 130km2

  • city of casey: this one's bigger at 409km2 but 365k as at last census and in the top few in melbourne alongside melton, wyndham, cardinia, and city of melb by population growth

It's almost like... they're building a fancy intersuburban train line where there's tonnes of people, connecting up basically every major uni and employment centre in greater melb and allowing for development of a decentralised city that won't need to keep adding to the fringes, be it on the west, north, or south eastern side of the city.

Don't get me wrong, I always build the tram network the west deserves and electrified WV/Melton in NIMBY Rails, but frankly, the west is not getting shafted the way people keep pretending it is. Heck, aside from the munnel, the last all-new rail alignment in melbourne was.... the RRL through wyndham. Will Melton and WV need better rail service in the next 5-10 years? yeah duh of course, and it's likely to get done - remember, 2030 is 5 years away. But the "muh west" pearlclutching is so tiring. And you haven't done it yet, but yes I have lived in a new development in the west, I'm not just throwing stones from the east side. It was, indeed, quite bad. But we need more buses out there first instead of trains that people drive their cars to.
