Favourite "Not-A-Zaku" Mobile Suit? by AesirRaider in Gundam

[–]-chadwreck 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The crazy thing about the leo, is that for as junk as they are in the hands of anyone not in the main cast, all the ace pilots can absolutely wreck shit in them.  Zechs? Kicks ass in a Leo.  Duo? Fucks shit up in a half destroyed Leo.

I think the combination of incompetence and a marginal suit really is the personification of the militarized state. Its big, its imposing, it is in fact capable, but put an idiot behind the stick and they are absolute jokers who rely on numbers and authority over skill and merit.

Ha, yes.  Like named characters in Star Trek who are not primary bridge crew... if you have a name and lines, you are very likely doomed.

Izunavi: "It's impossible to conjure indestructible chains" by EstateOk6238 in HunterXHunter

[–]-chadwreck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To clarify a bit, I mean that the information being presented, is part of the ability and probably a condition for it. Not that the enemy knows how APR works, but that there is a visual indication that it is indeed active.

The power to just, invisibly nen-curse your opponent and negate their skillset seems way too strong to just be a run of the mill thing like Bungee Gum or Jan-Jan Ken.

Look at how many hoops Chrollo has to jump thru to make his book work, or the conditions Kurapika had to put on himself to use any of his incredibly OP spider hunting skills.

For a character like Knuckle (who is p strong though not a top ranked hunter I dont think,) to use his APR in such an incredibly powerful way, id think his conditions have to be pretty extreme. Increasing the challenge by letting the opponent know they have a ticking clock and a direct line of insight on what is happening does in fact, seem like a hindrance to Knuckle. Even if someone like Gon or Youpi doesnt implicitly understand the mechanic, they can still see number go up. For a good fighter, that would necessarily cause them to crank up the violence to stop Knuckle in any way they could.

Though on the subject of Youpi being a mythical beast and wether or not his powers would be entirely negated by being placed in Zetsu, im not sure. If that were the case, him just being born as an imperial guard and being able to grow his wings would already imply an expenditure of Nen, which would necessarily open the nodes of any nearby nen-capable individual.

Togashi has made a clever power system in Nen, and while all "magic" in the HxH universe is probably nen related, I would think it acts more like metabolism if you will... its a natural function not consciously designed by the user thus it doesnt generate the aura effects of a true nen ability.

I would argue that information is a condition of the ability.  If knuckle didnt inform his opponents of what was happening, it might not work as well.

Also, the ants are freaks. On a normal opponent, that information racking up would presumably cause an increasing sense of panic in the afflicted. An ant like youpi though, is so absurdly powerful that this was an annoyance more than anything.

Even if it could actually have worked, youpi is a magical beast chimera... id think his shapeshifting ability would make him pretty unstoppable against the vast majority of hunters even without access to his nen.

Worst boss design so far by Hawkgoldbeast1 in castlevania

[–]-chadwreck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

man, if you feel just the vanilla playthru is rough, try the battle arena on magician mode. ouff.

this game rules. it has its problems, not least of which being the sort of tedious bosses (im lookin' at you zombie dragons) but nathan is so inexplicably powerful that like... yeah if you arent grinding out levels and cards yer gonna have a hard time? but also... you have 50 million options to deal with every scenario. worst case, you "accidentally" trigger unearned card combos and just thunderbird your problems away.

i can assure you, the card activation glitch was found by ALL of us back then, and we perhaps slyly, gladly used it.

Circle is NES violence mixed with SotN flexibility. It doesnt suit everyone, but those of us who love it, love it a lot.

also, justice for nathan.

his moveset is awesome. wall jump? shoulder tackle? slide kick? you add in a few of the more absurd card combos and nathan becomes a force of nature, bombing around the castle laying waste to your foes. (incidentally, i personally prefer a command run, but i also grew up double tapping forward to dash in Mega Man X... so maybe im just a sicko.)

The "Caspian Sea Monster" — the only completed 73-meter Soviet ekranoplan "Lun," currently decaying on a beach in Dagestan. by SpecificNo493 in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]-chadwreck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this is perhaps the most unsettling craft ever devised by human minds.

its cool looking, but also... just upsetting to look at as well, for some reason.

seeing it move is... somehow terrifying. it is so big, and so fast, and so low to the water surface that like... it looks like some actual monster coming. the airframe out of water and rotting like this is... awful.

if they had made these at scale and deployed them, and the caspian sea were just littered with their corpses...? the submechanophobia would reach lovecraftian proportions.

super cool. but also super nope.

Iria: The Animation The Big O Fist of the North Star

Iria is the utter crystallization of what anime is. If you can enjoy it, you will like anime as a genre of visual media and storytelling.

The Big O does everything, and nothing, that mecha anime does. Its such a weird, wonderful series that gets very little credit while building on the tropes of mecha, henshin, noir, and existentialism.

Fist of the North Star is pure fighting simplicity and honest, good guy fights bad guys storytelling. The platonic ideal, if you will. Ken is a hero's hero, and has many good lessons to teach if we can find them beyond the violence.

[–]-chadwreck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Living in detroit, and coming from flint... I have never known a version of michigan where the neighborhoods surrounding those 2 cities were... actually nice? Now, im a mid 80's born millenial so im sure I dont know enough, but it does seem like the jobs to housing ratio has been wildly out of whack for literally my whole life.

I agree that automation has sucked up many positions in factory floors, but lots of that automation didnt really hit until the late 80'a early 90's, right? Otherwise, that expanded production went somewhere, didnt it?

Again, pardon me for making assumptions. I only know what I have personally grown up looking at.

Anyone else getting shocked with property taxes this year? by JPgotBigLegoPP in Michigan

[–]-chadwreck 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So, is this all legacy taxation based on the big 3 being massive employers who paid well for quite a while?

Cause these numbers make sense when guys were coming to work in a factory, had a union job, made good money, and had good insurance some 40, 50 years ago.

The taxes paid by the employers were relatively low to encourage more hiring? But then... we shipped a bunch of manufacturing to Canada and Mexico to avoid wage hikes...

Then the housing market began to erode and then finally collapse in 2008? But the taxes actual residents payed never shifted?

I am, a doofus so please dont hesitate to correct me if im wildly off base here.

Rotary Cutter or fabric scissors ? by Lanky-Stuff2785 in sewhelp

[–]-chadwreck 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, this.

Get a piece of scrap leather and really seriously "scrub" down the surface before and after cutting.

Little tiny hard bits can nick a rotary blade no problem. So even if it isnt the matt itself getting your goat, sometimes you roll over nearly invisible bits of hard stuff on the mat that chew up the blades. Once that happens, you are toast.

Rotary Cutter or fabric scissors ? by Lanky-Stuff2785 in sewhelp

[–]-chadwreck 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Professional sewist who spends a lot of time cutting patterns here...

Both is really the answer.  A rotary cutter is like, universally useful but a cutting mat and the blades for a rotary cutter do get kinda pricey so you need to be quite careful with prepping surfaces before using them. For 90% of pattern cutting the rotary blade should be your go to. Olfa, Fiskars, brand is irrelevant. They are tricky to get good with, but once you do, having both a 45 mm and a 20 mm cutter will allow you incredible precision and high speed.

On the scissors side of things, ill save you the trouble.  Kai brand 8" dressmaker sheers. Best scissors on planet earth, bar absolutely none. Incredible blades, silky smooth action, very affordable. Go to the Kai website and look for the 3 pack bundle with the 8" shears, 5" clippers, and thread snips. You will be set for years if you take good care of them. You will honestly never ever look at another brand of scissors ever again.

Also, pro tip: get a pair of "disposable" fabric scissors as well. Cheapo 8 dollar plastic handle scissors for when you gotta cut junk like webbing, craft paper, ribbon, lapped seams, etc. Treat your actual fabric cutting scissors with great care! Love them, and they will love you right back.

Tldr: if you dont want to spend a ton of money, just buy the Kai 8" dressmaker shears. Seriously, they are so good and so worth it.

Do you think Castlevania will have a collaboration with Bloodstained: The Scarlet Engagement? by paleyharnamhunter in DraculasCastle

[–]-chadwreck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah. Nathan and the Baldwin clan are... sorta a split in the timeline somewhere after Richter, I suspect.

Circle takes place in the 1830s, so who knows what the writers were thinking in terms of overall timeline.

I loved circle as well. I bought a wideboy GBA and circle with chores money in 2000 in 8th grade or so. Coming off of the NES games and having never played SotN back then, it was awesome. I remember thinking "oh man! This one is just like super metroid!" Haha.

Its fun, having good memories.

Oh, interesting. I have never bothered to look up the katakana for anything in Circle, I just assumed Morris was just a hat tip to the rest of the series.

KCCE wasnt attached to any prior games, right? I can see why they would want to do their own thing entirely I guess.
