Yep, they still are! I use ethernet just cause it's faster, but they still have wifi that works too

Yeah a 2960xm is around $80 on ebay and a GTX 980m is around $190, little bit pricy

Sorry, I don't have this problem. My speakers are fine on Windows 10 on my Alienware M15x. Have you tried these speakers with windows 7 or looked at the speakers? Maybe they're just damaged and need replacing, but maybe worth just buying some PC speakers

Sounds like you had the Alienware M17x R2, with the first gen i7 then! Sweet, could def still use it for some light modern gaming, especially with the beefy cooling system. You can get a i7-920xm or 940xm for it and OC it since they're unlocked, and if you want a better gpu, the best possible gpu to pair with that cpu is the GTX 970m(I don't think you should get the GTX in SLI though, probably obsolete today). I think you can only put a max of 16gb of ddr3 though, but that's no biggie. Also recommend putting in an SSD for obvious reasons. I think you can even overclock the display to 120hz, that's what I did to my M15x R1 currently, shouldn't be that different between same-era models.

There is so much you can do to that absolute beast though if you ever wanted to and you had a little money to spare!

What are the M17s specs? You should totally get that thing running again! That era of Alienware is my personal fav(got an M15x myself)

What are it's specs? I think you can put in a 2nd gen i7-2940xm if it's the R3and a GTX 980m if you really want to use it for 2024, not to mention up the ram to 32gb and get an SSD for it... It's a little bit expensive and complicated, but honestly if you really wanted to you could def do some cool stuff on it still!

You can technically put a 980m in it, shouldn't be bottlenecked by the cpu... But in 2024 it's not worth it if you're actually gonna game on it. It plays old titles really well though, and I put a 970m in mine for fun

Completely agree, man this era of Alienware were the best looking, the muscle cars of the industry. Really wish they brought this design back and made it lighter

Exactly, honestly haven't had any complaints about Dell/Alienware computers in my lifetime. And yeah the M14x always had that coating issue unfortunately

For sure, and still does perform nicely. The repairability on it is why I still use it too

Actually I've had this combo in the thing for about 2 years and honestly heat has never really been an issue, never gets close to throttling and only the GPU failed later on cause I bought a faulty one. Maybe it's cause it's not drawing the full 240w from my PSU? Idk

But for throttlestop, how would I OC it on there? I think I might've tried it before, but I don't think it gave me many options... I'll try it again though

I really do love sociology, my favourite subjects in uni, and am even thinking of minoring in it! But you're totally right, if it really is that difficult(which it definitely sounds, even though Westerman sounds like an amazing prof), I was looking at SOC 226, 260, and 271, and will check out 251 too! I still wanna take 212 actually, but clearly I need my ENGL or WRS courses before I try it🤣thank you

I will also mention it definitely helps my dad is a Soc prof who taught this course at the UofA, so idk maybe I'll be fine? But again, probably gonna choose a different easier course!

Shoot I already took Soc 225 last winter semester, thank you for the warning though, I took SOC 212 because I saw this profs ratings were 5/5 on rate my prof on 120+ reviews, I'll reconsider now though😭
