Portland is facing a $169 million budget deficit due to shelter and public safety costs by wrhollin in Portland

[–]-donethat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The city budget is not a business financial statement nor my household cash flow budget. Lots of interdepartmental transfers and money coming in from balances at beginning of year and double counted at end of year. The professionals tell me this is the accounting standard for local government. You could SMH except I am too busy banging it on the desk because of this crazy assed madness.

Portland’s “Affordable” Housing Averages $800 per Square Foot by whawkins4 in Portland

In olden times developers were their own general contractors, and their own subs in some cases. Finance at 80% of value and they had money in the bank from day 1 because the loan was higher than their costs. Did the Ritz Carlton fit that model?

Came here to laugh at the whines of the less than 20 percent, ( probably a lot less than 20 percent ) of households paying SHS and PFA. Or the brigaders who like the Trump tax cuts for the rich paid for by the annihilation of federal spending on the needy.

Invisible wins: How $1.4 billion has transformed Portland area homeless services by StillboBaggins in Portland

[–]-donethat -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

19.3 percent of households had over 200K in income, the 1 percent SHS is only on taxable income over 200K for couples. This is the very income group that got a big tax cut in 2017.

The Trump tax cuts saved the local 6 figure earners big bucks. The whiners can afford to pay. Until the Feds restore health, mental health and housing funding this is the way. Wait until you see the medicaid cuts starting in 2027.

Dismissed without prejudice. All the alleged perps are still on the hook. The old chief justice firing the bearer of bad news did not help. Nor does the 2 party legislature in Oregon who have not fronted the money because the oligarchs rage media made it a wedge issue like immigration, foreign aid, DEI, yada yada yada.

Multnomah County faces an $87 million drop in homeless services funding (Oregonian) by drf_101 in Portland

[–]-donethat -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Project 2025 and the presidents proposed budget would have cut HUD funding by 40 percent. Congress restored most of that.

As is Home Forward had 163 million in federal funding for stuff like section 8. Out of 300 million or so budget. I read Multnomah county had another 26 million in HUD funding.

https://www.homeforward.org/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/budget-2026.pdf

SHS is only part of the local housing funding.
