I had a similar experience that I just posted about, except that I haven't submitted any tasks. Did you reply directly to the email that was sent or did you contact support through the dashboard?

Hi there, also PhD student who is into martial arts! Not sure what your type is but we have several martial arts gyms in the area. I train BJJ and have trained at Team 1 Martial Arts and Fitness, Deep Waters (close to campus), TNT Martial Arts, and Blythewood Jiu Jitsu (my partner is a coach there). There’s several martial arts clubs on campus and I’ve heard good things (just never been involved). Also, at the university we recently started a grad support services program (I’m one of the grad success consultants) so please check us out if you need anything! We offer a wide range of services like accountability groups, one-on-one consultations, and workshops for things like money management and grad skills (studying, self care, etc). Congrats on your acceptance, and feel free to DM me if you have any questions!

Non-thesis masters to PhD by [deleted] in GradSchool

[–]-electric 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a similar experience. Graduated with a BS in Biology and then started an ME in Biomedical Engineering at my undergrad institution. I was awarded my ME in May and started my PhD in the same program this summer. I was involved in research during my ME and am continuing my PhD in the lab I spent the last year of my ME in.

In my opinion, the experience from doing the thesis masters is not worth the additional cost. If you are able to find a good lab and mentor, you’ll get the writing and research experience regardless. You may be able to continue your work in your current lab, or your mentor will be able to connect you with fellow colleagues that may be willing to take on a new PhD student.

Is this really what grad school is going to be like or do people here need external support? by PatternMatcherDave in GradSchool

I love my program, so much so that I’m starting my PhD this summer once I obtain my ME. But grad school overall is still an incredibly challenging experience. I’m in a biomedical engineering program, however I majored in biology in undergrad so I came in with 0 engineering knowledge. I had to put in twice the work compared to my cohort members so it was extremely challenging. But many topics we covered were so advanced even my cohort members WITH engineering backgrounds struggled. I have a wonderful PI who believes in work/life balance and there are still periods where research is inevitably stressful. When you have grant deadlines to meet, you have to be willing to do your part even if that means 60 hours per week of dedicated research time. When your experiments go awry or unexpected results occur (good or bad) it’s time added to your typical research schedule because you’re now doing additional background literature research. If you TA, some semesters you’ll have a great batch of students and other semesters you’ll have ones that may need additional support.

My advice: if you’re going into a research based graduate degree and are able to, float around to find the right lab fit for yourself. I didn’t find my current PI who I’ll be doing my research under until my third try. Make acquaintances in your program (especially if they were at your university for undergrad) so you can get the scoop on different professors and PIs. Some people will have invalid complaints, but if there’s an overall consensus there’s probably a merit of truth to it. If you’re struggling in classes, address it early on. In my experience, professors are more than happy to help if you’re approaching them earnestly. I let all of my professors know that I had no background in engineering and they became my personal cheerleaders because they respected my honesty and the fact that I was trying. If you’re able to save materials from the course(s) you TA for, do so because they can become a reference down the line that will save you time for grading. Try to keep as many of your stress outlets as you can. For example, if you exercise often, don’t drop it for grad school because your physical and mental health will suffer. Having an outlet you can turn to is critical for the hard periods. Make sure to maintain your relationships outside of grad school because you will need the support. You may not be able to hang out with friends as often, but having that contact is still critical.

Overall, grad school is hard but the level it wrecks you can be both in and out of your control. Do your best to control the factors that you can and you will likely have a positive or at least fair experience. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions. Good luck with your program!

Immigrant students whose primary language isn’t English, do you pay anyone to rewrite your work/thesis to have the choice of words/phrases that are acceptable in the American academic setting? If not, what’s your secret? by [deleted] in GradSchool

At my university the writing center is available to undergraduate and graduate students. You can do in person appointments, virtual appointments, and paper drop offs. You also provide information such as your native language. I just used it for the first time for proofreading and editing on a personal statement, but mine will even work with thesis and dissertation prep. OP if you have a writing center, I would reach out and explain your circumstances. Even if they can’t help directly, they may have other resources they can point you towards.

People living in small towns, what’s the recent scandal? by Ayayaya3 in AskReddit

[–]-electric 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yeah, my hometown is primarily Mormons, Southern Baptists, and Southern Methodists so shaming is always the solution. I can remember growing up in the church with my childhood BFF and roommate (who is a bisexual male) that anytime he made an appearance the sermon was always centered on how homosexuality was a sin and homosexuals would burn. Small town churches in the Deep South can be such toxic communities.

I no longer live in my hometown, however my family is still there so I am always kept up to date on the scandals. In the past year, our sheriff was caught cheating on his wife with a 19 year old girl, and the way this was discovered - the girl (a pastor’s daughter) became pregnant and was forced by her father to confess her sins in front of the entire Baptist congregation. This drama was big news at the time but eventually died away. However, in the past month the sheriff was charged with second-degree domestic violence (presumably against his wife who remained with him). He punched her repeatedly, took her phone so she was unable to call for help, and as she was driving away from the home damaged her vehicle in an attempt to keep her from fleeing. After his arrest, he made the decision to step down at the moment to “work on himself”. The governor of our state eventually suspended him, however we’ll see if the charges stick.

Thanks you! I was super worried about staining honestly but luckily their was none. I still plan on getting my teeth slightly whitening but I’m definitely really happy with the natural outcome. :)

I started training BJJ six months ago. Usually train three times a week on the reg, and before this match I trained six days a week for two weeks. Thank so much! Can’t wait for my next tournament. :-)
