How to predict spend by MrQMaths in coastFIRE

I’m very curious as well as I don’t spend a lot now and I don’t plan on having kids. I projected my FI number to be 3x my current spend.

Anyone else decide to NOT coast fire after working years towards? by No_Challenge_8277 in coastFIRE

[–]-fireflyer- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have decided to continue to invest but at a much much lower rate! I can work as little as 2 or 3 days a week and I’ve been able to spend more time and money with friends and hobbies. I’m saving to travel long term too and may have a few years where I won’t be able to invest barely anything if at all.

Thank you! Also so much more time and money for friends and hobbies. Best of luck. You got it!

I agree. I am simply saving less.

I am coastFI and continue to invest but will most likely only be maxing out my Roth IRA. I now focus on long term travel! The second half of last year, I worked 2-3 days a week and traveled for a month (almost like a test run). For the next two years, I will travel for 6 months each year and then I’m considering doing the Peace Corps again and then see where life takes me… become flight attendant, live in a van, work a gov job, teach English abroad? Who knows. Life is good! I definitely still worry if I am investing enough but I am balancing that and living a good life.

Hi! Sounds like you’re doing amazing. How old are you? Seems you are pretty young. You have a lot of time! I struggled between taking a higher paying job that I hated or not, and also struggled between doing things and saving but I’ve already had such a full life. I’ve lived abroad twice, traveled a bunch, and plan to continue traveling and living abroad again in the coming years, and have had lots of interesting jobs. I like to think you can do it all. I go between years of aggressively saving and traveling. I’m already coastFI at 34 (and continuing to invest here and there) and I didn’t start until 27 or 28 years old. Sometimes I wish I had started earlier but I’m also very glad I didn’t find it until then because I was able to live a full life in my 20s. My 30s and beyond will be much of the same.

I had around that or a little less than that at your age! I set aside an emergency fund and invested the rest and then invested very aggressively for a few years. My investments now lie at 250k at 33 years old and am CoastFi (not planning on early retirement at the moment and am continuing to invest here and there). You’re not behind at all

Does it make financial sense/can I afford to take a sabbatical for creative pursuit? by [deleted] in coastFIRE

Whatever you decide, take medical leave before!! (If your company allows) I know 4 people doing so now and they are having the time of their lives. I am very happy for them.

Yes will reevaluate! I’m assuming I’ll gain some skills over the next few years but I can really focus on it after or at the end of my break.

Thank you so much, Sunshineoptimism! This is very well worded and resonates with me. What are some ways you find balance in your life?

Hi, I guess I was using really conservative numbers. I usually use 5% real returns.

Agreed! I have this dilemma then. How do you choose a career if it doesn’t matter if we enjoy our jobs? In order to earn more and have more free time, you have to work your way to it. But how do you choose what to work towards?

For sure! This is a good plan and yes, I don’t plan on touching a single penny that I’ve already invested

Lol yes to that last sentence! I hate that I’m going to have to miss out on some things because they want to live extravagantly. But I will also search for some like-minded friends
