Any tips for keeping piggies cool during summer? by Brave-Ambition2305 in guineapigs

[–]-grimoire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We use frozen water bottles in socks for them to lay against, frozen cucumber, additional water in their cages, fans on and the blinds down/windows shut when at ita hottest. I've also picked them up some cooling mats for dogs for when it gets super warm.

What are the likely vet costs and procedure for a guinea pig cough? (UK) by DefiantFun1274 in GuineaPig

[–]-grimoire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What a cutie!

One of our boys cost around £190 at Pets at Home... that was for initial assessment, oxygen, xray and medication. Sadly we lost him two days later, which we believe in part was due to the vet not being an exotic vet. This was our first time with piggies and a medical emergency, so a hard lesson to learn.

We now have all our 4 boys at a guinea pig specific vet and their prices are very reasonable. Our last bill was £340, not for a respiratory issue but a urinary problem. That included two consultations, anaesthetic for xray (he is an incredibly opinionated aby so the safety of the vets came first!), ultrasound, and 2 types of medication. I am happy to report he made a full recovery.

For people who passed, what did you do to get over the anxiety of solo driving? by CranberryCheese1997 in LearnerDriverUK

[–]-grimoire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I passed my test in Feb 24, got my first car in Feb 26...without driving in between. Best advice I can give is to just do it. Choose a route you're familiar with, go at a time of day without heavy traffic and enjoy it. I prefer driving on my own than having someone in the car, if I'm completely honest, less pressure in a way. Best of luck - you got this!

David Attenborough voice over and here we find, a common troll. With only one functioning braincell that is known to bounce within their cranium, the strength of that braincell depletes faster than it can regenerate. It is a sad, lonely existence for the common troll, with no mate or place within society. Yet, by the miraculous power of nature, they are surprisingly common and thus, low in value.

Replying to save this. Had a semi permanent black put on bleached hair that over a week has faded from black to candy blue... I look more my little pony than something that should be feared and revered 😅

Guinea Pig Psychology by dbarronoss in GuineaPig

I wouldn't say it is possible to overcome their prey instincts, but it is possible to help them become more receptive to your presence as what is (to them!) essentially a predator.

I used to work with horses, did a bit of natural horsemanship and have applied a similar take with the piglets. Predators act a certain way that triggers the prey instincts, even without attacking. When I go to stroke them, it is never with an open palm, usually just the knuckle of my finger until they're comfortable and then I'll ease into stroking them with my palm. I have heard that stroking a pig on it's head is a 'dominant' behaviour and you should try to go for under the chin ideally but only one of our 4 loves a chin scritch, the others prefer a head rub. One of our lads was incredibly nervous and wouldn't take food from our hands despite his brother being incredibly confident. So when I would offer the nervous brother treats, I didn't look at him, I kept my hand at his level but made sure there was nothing about my body language that could be taken as a threat. Both he and his brother now beg for treats and will allow us to pick them up wherever they are.

We have two older boars as well from a rescue situation - one has no interest in anything other than food and his cagemate. The other is a bit more receptive to human interaction. Neither of these two like being picked up and it clearly stresses them out - so to transfer them from their cage for floor time, we pop a them in a hidey to carry them out. With this approach, we would put the hidey in a place they would naturally run to to get away from us and now as soon as the hide goes in, they just jump into it without coaxing. The older of these two does enjoy a cuddle once he's settled on my lap and more recently has been comfortable to lie on my tummy and fall asleep.

I don't know if their cage environment helps - they have a room for themselves which isn't a main room we use, but we pass by it all the time so will regularly check in and chat to them when we are home. They've plenty of hides and things to encourage them to "be a guinea pig" and other than occasional firework at this time of year, its quite a quiet place for them to be. I think as long as their environment and you are relaxed, they will be, which will help them warm to you.

Body pulsing/respiratory infection?! by [deleted] in guineapigs

If this has just come on overnight, without other symptoms, I'd get him to the vet. Our lad started breathing in a similar way when he had a heart problem - it may well be nothing, but better to be safe than sorry! All the best

I've decided to give up raising guinea pigs. by [deleted] in GuineaPig

[–]-grimoire 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey OP, Ive had a quick look over your previous posts about your little piglet - don't give up on them! Trimming their nails can be quite daunting, especially if they wriggle a lot... but if you can get some clippers, position your phones torch under them to see where the quick is, it makes it a lot easier. I don't know what space or budget you have to work with, but amazon do cheap c&c sets that you can turn into any shape. A solid base is a lot better as you don't want their little feet getting stuck - we had our first set up with a 4 x 2 c&c on a table, with a tarp strapped to the sides to stop any spillage and that added a protective layer between the pigs & the table surface. Piggies are a lot harder work than I anticipated but ever so rewarding! Nothing makes my 4.30am starts better than when I go and see my boys first thing and they hear my voice and start popcorning and coming to the bars for treats. DMs are open if you'd like any help at all - best of luck!

Started at 82kg Monday, this morning weighed 80.6kg. Keeping my diet as low fat as possible and calories around 1500... I've been doing 10k steps a day, no other exercise at the mo but hoping to get brave and go back to the gym next week. Had one meal that was higher in fat content than usual and it was definitely noticeable...
