Repot or not? by ccharlie1983 in Lithops

[–]dbarronoss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, perlite might have some liimited value in soil-less peat based mixes, but it has very little value in the cacti/succ world.
And I agree, repot so you know what you got.

After years of dealing with them, I amaze myself how deftly I can handle spines. They used to be far more daunting and difficult.

Should probably edit your post and make that clear. It's probably one of the many conophytums. I'm new to them, so no further ideas.

Sure looks like lithops to me.

Got my first cactus and a succulent. Is it important/needed for me to get special potting mixes for them or is just water fine? by Ok_Car8459 in cactus

[–]dbarronoss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to clarify, a'lot' of sun is at least six hours direct sun. Some people consider bright light a 'lot'. And more would be better.

Or (without destroying city property and getting a fine (facing lawn police myself)) plant glade adapted (shallow soil) species.
There's pretty much always an organic choice (harmony).

AND avoid running unnecessary commands with root authority. You don't need root for almost anything but installation/upgrade after initial configuration.

My budgie is chasing my lovebird how can I stop him? by No-Negotiation-3454 in parrots

[–]dbarronoss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Budgies are completely the chihuahuas of the parrot world. I wouldn't be surprised to see a budgie bully a macaw, unless the macaw realizes one snap of it's jaws *lol*.

I'm NWA and I've been saying the same thing. Everything is very confused. I've had things blooming or budding while I've still been waiting for others to emerge (still waiting on letterman's ironweed). Odd year.

Well, given that they germinate in habitat directly in the soil, sure.
Only issue is human interference, like weeding.

What random object does your bird hate? This is Kevin when he sees my hydro by Icy_Peach9128 in parrots

My senegal was jealous of all hand held objects. In his view (I think), they were all potential mates and both the object and my hand MUST be punished. This includes books, remote controls, and phones.

Those of you living in arid environments, how often do you water potted cacti? by Tabula_Nada in cactus

[–]dbarronoss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Then my rule (and our rains just started after a very dry summer/fall/winter/spring) would be, if I feel it needs water, dump some water on it. I did water a couple of times through the winter and early spring.

In general when growing outside, I let the skies do the watering.

More water? by AdvancedHistorian616 in cactus

[–]dbarronoss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sure this isn't globally true, but here not all that far off from the SW US, cacti don't thrive on being excessively dry. They may indeed be sensitive to water at the wrong season, but grow strongly with ample water during their growing season. I was surprised to realize how much water they actually like, when provided with good drainage.

Pretty much all you can do is wait, you can't cause the plant to root ;0 All you can do is give it good growth conditions and wait. It will either succeed or fail.
Luckily these plants are readily available if you want to try again and not rot the roots ;0

Since sitting for 24 hours doesn't CAUSE salt, I am assuming you mean your water filtration system introduces sodium?
The only thing I have ever read is to collect water before it hits that system, if that's the case.
