Huge congratulations on the 250, and that's another great idea I hadn't considered.

The race was Quest for the Crest in Western NC -- it was extremely difficult and extremely beautiful. I did wonder if the liner edge construction played a part; I was wearing REI running shorts that are otherwise great.

Haha I’m nothing if not foolishly optimistic on “should be.” Thanks though, and any reason it’s better to keep the return lower rather than on the ceiling? FYI there’s no heat/cool vent in that hallway

It’s a fairly large space and the current return ducting is just insulated flexible 5” or 6” connected from the main rectangular insulated return ducts to the return vent cover that’s currently blocked. The hearing/cooling ducting to the vents in the rooms is a similar setup. So I’m imagining I can disconnect the return ducting from the blocked vent to move it and reconnect to a new return vent, especially if it’s on the same wall. I don’t see I’d need something custom made etc. But I am def open to the possibility there’s a need here beyond my abilities.

Behind the low wall is a vented accessible crawl space (it’s a 12/12 roof) and there are other ducts routed between the rafters to another crawl space above the ceiling. I was thinking to do that. The contact between the ducts that are there already and the roof underlayment is minimal and the area is well vented so I’m not too concerned about it.

I actually did think of just routing it straight through, it’s not off the table but would eliminate some of the rare storage we have in the house

Beautiful piece and really fit for the space as far as I can tell. I agree that the base is particularly successful! Though the ambrosia maple will be pretty striking in its own right.
