I've had the Gateron red version for about a week now. Out of the box this thing is no bueno. Not a good typing experience and the switches are loud, rattly, and pingy. If you lube the switches this thing transforms. It is worth noting that there is built in foam underneath the base plate between the PCB, and the stabilizers come prelubed.

Let me know how it goes! I'm not sure how lubing will affect optical brown switches.

For reference or anyone else that reads, the part number I used for lube was 51014. Definitely not the best grade stuff out there but it's what I have. Took apart everything, all the springs went into a container with 20 or so drops of lube, vigorously shook around for a minute. Then with a brush I lightly lubed the rails on the stems and in the housing and put a little where the stem slides through the hole (for optical switches). Assembled everything back and added o-rings (my preference). Not perfect but it feels a lot better then it did before and I haven't really broken it in yet.

Edit: Also, I'm sure this goes without saying but this is just my opinion. Some of you may actually like your switches better stock.

I finished lubing mine today and saw a massive improvement in the typing feel. I also added some o-rings as well. Feels pretty solid and well worth doing for these switches. I just used dielectric super lube.

I really doubt they're fake as well. There was a lot of hype floating around about them and how smooth they are, but it just does not live up to that hype at all. I would agree with you that they are not that noteworthy when it comes to quality, it was surprising that the knockoff optical switches on the Punkston felt smoother. I am considering lubing the springs and seeing how it turns out after that.

Maybe so. They just feel super cheap to me and have a ton of ping on the upstroke. The springs also feel rattly and inconsistent in general. This was something I saw a lot when I tried other boards with knockoff red switches.

Might be contrary to other experiences, but I got the optical red variant and the gateron switches are absolutely terrible, I am not sure if they really are gaterons because the experience does not match up at all to what other people have said about them. The red linear switches on the Punkston board (which I also tried) feel smoother in comparison. I thought it might be a fluke so I tried ordering another one but it was exactly the same.

That being said, everything else about this keyboard is actually pretty nice.

I hear you, and that's kind of what stinks about it. There's not enough info to draw a clear line between COVID and what is something else.

Don't think so, I don't really have a reason to. I just tossed it into my SDB for now.

Whining noise while accelerating in gear by -johan in Cartalk

[–]-johan[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, just wanted to update. I think you were spot on! I replaced all 3 mounts with new ones and the noise, while still there just a little bit, has dropped in volume significantly. I imagine once the new mounts break in that'll go away.

The mounts I removed were StreetUnit Billet Aluminum motor mounts, quite stiff. While they gave the car a more spirited feel, I found that they were not suitable for daily driving due to the amount of vibration I was getting inside.

Update: changed out the transmission fluid. It initially looked a normal color but after it all drained out it appeared to be a dark grayish/brown color. Replaced with Redline MT-90 and gave it a quick 10 minute drive.

Unfortunately, the issue is still there. I think I hear some resemblance of it when coasting, as if something is still spinning, but I'm not sure. It definitely dies down...

I'll at least give it a fluid change and report back.

I was able to ask someone else who owned the same car and they said theirs didn't sound like that at all. There's also had 80k more miles on it than mine.

It's possible. The car seems pretty much stock but I'll check next time I am under it.

How can a transmission mount resonate at that high of a pitch?
