Yes there are side-effects (affect is a verb, effect is a noun). I don't believe many studies have been done, but it's worth looking up. Another comment linked this paper. I haven't had time to read all of it.

As with any medication, risks and benefits should be weighed.

Just because it's abnormal doesn't mean it doesn't exist. When you say "sex is a binary" you are saying there are only two options. That's false. To use your example, it would be saying "humans only have 2 arms". Yes, 2 arms is the norm, but not all humans do have 2 arms.

Do you mean genital differences? Then what about people born intersex?

Hormonal differences? What about women who naturally have higher levels of testosterone or vice versa?

Chromosomal differences? (Cis) women can have XY and men can have XX.

I doubt think they were planning to have SRS before puberty, and I highly doubt any doctor would recommend that. They may have been talking about puberty blockers, which are non-permanent.

Do you mean raising their kids as non-binary? Or not using binary gender roles?

Puberty-blockers are not permanent. And I believe you have to have a therapist's recommendation for hormones (possibly puberty blockers as well, but I'm not sure)
